Anyway I'm back looking at a side by side. I'm a cheapskate but my kids will eventually grow up  and I think they'd have fun and if wouldbe better suited than one of my pick ups, my Tundra is pretty old w/300k miles. I'm looking for a RZR 1000 4, I think. Although I don't know how durable they are. Also I guess all the 4 seaters are 50"+ Some trails in Utah are width restricted. I've only ridden old timey ride on top ATVs, I've been in side by sides when other people were driving. A friend took us out in a big Polaris? Five or six seater that had a cab and ac or heat. My kids fell asleep. I'm sure that type of thing is outside my budget. |

I would look at what Yamaha or Kawasaki offers within your budget and mission. The Polaris machines seem more breakdown prone from what I have seen over the years from multiple friends that use a variety of them. Attached File |

Stop with the polaris junk, also look at 64 inch wide machines not 50 inch. The 50s are only designed to run atv width trails. The 64 inch machines are sort of the sxs standard width and somewhat less tippy. Hvac equipped machines are priced between 30 to 40k depending on how fancy you want it. You'd be best off buying something new because you know it's maintenance record then. I know there has been a lot of buzz on the new 4 seat cf moto. Those things used to be absolutely junk, but I think they are improving things more recently. I'd take a modern cf moto over a polaris these days. |

I watched a video on YouTube by a guy who has a general. In a year he had the belt develop a worn spot which set off an engine warning, a defective switch that kept it from switching between 1w-2w-4wd and a clutch problem and a fuse that kept rattling loose. :( The Polaris seem nicer, faster but less reliable and more expensive. |

You know how fast the RzR 1000s go right? We rented them for a day and I was just glad they have good brakes. Gad they are fun in the desert tho. My slo poke 19 Wolverine is still getting it done trouble free, but if you want to fly get something else. |

I have the General and 2x 570 Quads that I've never had a problem with, I don't ride then in deep water or mud though. |

RZR's usually break because paople beat the shit outa them. We have 8 on our hunting lease,that get used a lot with no problems . We have 3 generals no issues either. We have 3 Honda Pioneers no issues either. 2 Kawasaki Terryx no issues. All the above ATV's are very actively used but no abused,they all have needed brakes/tires and general maintenance not much else. Buy what you want and can afford ,take care of it and it'll be good.Each machine has its' personality and weakness. I have a RZR and a Honda,The Honda is a "truck" the RZR is a " sports car"!!!!!! |

It works well for everythign I've used it for and will go places I never thought it would and I wouldn't if I had the choice...  Also, if bought as a "Farm or AG Vehicle" its personal property tax exempt. |

My buddy has a 2017 RZR 1000 Turbo with 3000+ miles on it. He doesn't beat on it, but he also doesn't baby it. Aside from a new belt from time to time it's been really reliable. He's had it all over NM, AZ and UT hunting and riding. The one thing it doesn't do well is go slow. If you are trying to creep around at less than 20mph, the cvt is constantly trying to engage and disengage. If your riding is going to be medium to high speed, it's a good machine. If you are looking at slow to medium speeds, something else would probably do better. |

I took my butt to a place that sold Can-Ams and rented them and Polaris machines. I climbed in and out of various go-fast and work-hard machines and sort of settled on the hybrid do-everything OK, nothing too specialized segment. I took a Can-Am Maverick, Commander, and Defender and the Polaris RZR and General for sort rides around the dealer's back 40 and ended up wanting more of an upright seat for working around the property, and speed/agility for the trails. Can-Am Commander or the Polaris General/Expedition series of buggies were the "just right" feel for my butt. The Polaris machines were more expensive and had less options, the Can-Ams more stripped/bare bones with more build options. Sort of like German vs. Japanese car options. I love tinkering and building on my autos so I bought the Can-Am and have been customizing since.

The RZRs are durable enough if you aren't going gonzo rock-crawling, jumping and nose-diving them, running them into stationary objects at speed, etc.. Yes, there are some 50" restricted trails in the national forests, but generally not that many, and there's almost always a bypass around them for wider vehicles, so you're fine. Plus, even the 50" SxS can be real tight on a 50" trail, they're generally made for dirt bikes and ATVs. In fact, there aren't even many 60" trails, so feel free to do 60, 64, 72" width, whatever. If you're trying to pick a model, go test drive a bunch, and drive them over bumps. You'll figure out right away which are going to be rocking your heads around over every little bump, and which are going to be smooth and comfortable. In general, anything with the no-name OEM shocks is going to be... rough. You want Fox shocks, and at least 10-12" of travel. When you see a rut across the road, it's nice to just keep going, and it to not even be a bump or a thing. The X3 lineup from Can Am have weirdly reclined seats... a lot of people DIY setting the seats in a more normally upright position. Their Maverick lineup has the seats set normally to begin with. Don't worry terribly about power, even the "wimpy" ones will hit 70+ MPH. Unless you're drag racing with your friends or trying to hit MASSIVE air from the dunes, they all have plenty of power. You generally run out of suspension or traction before you run out of power, if you get my drift. |
