I could see you riding around in a Fiat 850 Spider...

Top Down, sun on the face, wind in the hair.

Speedo maxing out at 62 mph or so...

Buddy had one his parents gave him in High School.

Theory was with such a neutered & gutless engine he couldn't get going fast enough to get into a serious wreck.

The Car Came down from Indiana, and had steel studded snow tires on the back.

We discovered that you could come into a turn, rev up the engine, drop the clutch in a corner on concrete and then SURPRISE!!!

Drift that bitch while shooting a shower of SPARKS off the rear tires...

It really wasn't a car, just a big Go Cart with Doors ...

My best friend in grad school drove a Samurai for four years.  He bought it used cheap - drove it for four years in summer heat, snow, ice, etc, and only put a muffler on it - ZERO other repairs, and then he sold it for exactly what he paid for it.  He loved that car.

I've had a Samurai restoration business forever, and obviously love the stupid little things.

They'll go anywhere you point them, but they're not as cheap as they used to be.

Nice examples are selling for stupid prices now. The tintop I have now I paid $500 for 15 years ago, and I've had offers for well over $10k.

There still cheap to build once you have the vehicle, and dead reliable.

Why not just pick up an old 500 and put a honda engine in it?

I'm looking for an old mini right now that I plan on doing an engine conversion and AWD, but then again I like doing jobs like that.

I've almost finished my old Porsche 911 project, so I need something else to waste money on.

Before OP joined up here I did post pics of a Fiat 500 Abarth that one of my manager's bought that had been very well restored.

IIRC he paid $12.5 for it.

They guy is 6'4" and had to slide the fabric sunroof back to drive it.
Thing is an Italian clown car , he still has it.

Get yourself a Zastava 750.  You can import them from Europe.  It was the car my family had when I was born in 81.  Don't think it had back seat belts lol.  Always wanted to have one as a joke.

If you want to deal with the import process, there are some cherry ones that sell on bringatrailer pretty regular. Recent restorations and they tend to go for around $10k. The guys that sells them says shipping usually costs around a grand and they sometimes already have other cars being shipped to NY harbor so you can get a combined rate.

The one question mark is what the import duties cost for a car like that.

Edit:  look at the Nissan figaro and pao, they were a series of cars built in the early 90s designed after the classic 50s mini cars. Most people call them pike cars after the factory that built them.

I raced and won a championship in a Fiat 128 3P 20 years ago.  I'm sure there are pictures but I don't have them here.  It looked like the picture below but it was yellow and the roof was a bit fucked from being flipped and pounded out.  Great little shit box.

I had one of those!
It had a Serra(?) camshaft, Lancia carb, header, Ansa exhaust and lots of timing.
It made about 4HP under 4K RPM, but above that it went wild and you could shift off the tach at over 8K RPM.
A fun car, and I'd like to have another, but I think rust has taken them all.
I wouldn't mind a Brava, though.

The '60s style Fiats were still being made in Argentina in the early 80s. Nice little cars, but the rear cover was often propped open during the summer so the engine could get adequate ventilation.

'60s style Ford Falcons were very popular, too. They were identical, only the dashboard markings had been changed to Spanish (or the Argentine version of it).
Evidently Ford shipped all their tools and dies down after they changed the style in the US.

Then there was the Citroen 2CV...

Well you did say you wanted modern engine management and other creature comforts, so I'm just giving some idea's on how to go that route.

You could always start out with a project car and work to get it where you want.

It's not like you don't have the skills needed.

If you want a car that looks great and works, try a miata with a Simpson Design body. I mean why bring work home?

My buddy brought one back from Italy. He was stationed there in the navy. Not a repro though.

I forget what year it is but it’s from the 60s and tops out around 40mph.

How about a Ciroen Ami electric?

Otherwise, a 500 Abarth. They are a hoot, especially the exhaust sound.

I had a 59 Fiat 500 bianchina.  Had suicide doors.  Was a blast to drive. That was around 1969.

Gave two CB radios for it.
