IDF Holds Exercise Simulating War With Syria
by Ezra HaLevi

The IDF held a large-scale exercise Tuesday simulating the invasion of Syria in the context of a war with the hostile Arab country to Israel’s north.

Infantry units, tank divisions and the Air Force took part in the exercise. It took place at the Shizafon IDF installation, in the southern Negev.

Asked about the exercise by Army Radio, Defense Minister Amir Peretz said that the IDF was indeed preparing for the possibility of war with Syria, but said this does not mean that Israel would initiate such a war. "Our preparedness is not an indication of any decision by either us or Syrians to go to war - these are purely defensive measures," he said.

IDF Intelligence Chief Maj.-Gen. Amos Yadlin said Syria will not attack Israel and that this upgrading of military and troop movements is “merely precautionary.” He said Syria “saw what happened during the Second Lebanon War and our deterrence became more effective.”

A similar IDF drill conducted last year was meant to simulate a Gaza invasion – which took place on a limited scale soon after when Cpl. Gilad Shalit was kidnapped by Gaza terrorists.

This year, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi made reference to both Gaza and the northern front in his briefing before the IDF Officers Training School. "The IDF is preparing for an escalation on both the Palestinian and the northern fronts," he said. "The IDF's goal is to improve its readiness while simultaneously continuing to fight terror."

Syria Confirms: Planning For War
Syrian MP Muhammad Habash told Al-Jazeera Arabic world news satellite television network Tuesday that Syria is indeed actively preparing for war with Israel, and that Syria expects the war will start this summer. He claimed it was Israel’s government, however, that wants the war, in order to survive politically.

Officials Weigh in on Whether to Negotiate With Syria
Peretz said that he hopes that the upgrading of military preparedness on both sides will not preclude Syria and Israel engaging in negotiations.

IDF Chief of Staff Ashkenazi has also reportedly advocated secret negotiations with Syria.

Mossad Chief Meir Dagan, however, strongly opposed talk of responding to Bashar Assad’s public overtures – saying they are aimed purely at alleviating pressure on Syria to curb its support for various terrorist groups.

Gaza Warnings
In his briefing of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Yadlin warned that Israel must prepare for the possibility that Katyusha rockets – with a 40 km (25 mile) range will be obtained and used by terror groups in Gaza.

Hopefully we are shipping ordnance to Isreal as we speak...

Maybe if Israel beats the snot out of Syria the insurgents in Iraq will lose support for the fight.  At the same time it could be very bad news for all soldiers in the mid-east.

Yes.

I expect Israel to elect  Benny the Net (Benjamin Netanyahu) as Prime Minister and Benny the Net will have Israel in a full scale war within 12 mos.

The same Bibby who shook hands with Arafat?

No. He's borderline traitor material just like Sharon pre-coma.

Moshe Feiglin is the only candidate I trust. He would rule according to Torah law, not the laws of this hypocritical liberal democracy that they've set up there.

Agreed....but it is going down this summer.

I'd feel better with Israel at war with Netanyahu as Prime Minister than that soft-ass pacifist that they have now.

Israel had the opportunity to roll into Damascus when they took the Golan Heights the first time.

If they get the opportunity again, I hope they take it. It would severely hamper Iran.

I have a haed time believeing Assaad would risk outright war with Israel, when the Israelis are done dismantling his armor and trrops he would likely have a coup on his hands.

Olmert should return to policies that reinforce this concept.

It seems they are being encouraged by Iran. Maybe having Iran's support gives them the "pack mentality" and makes them more cocky. Perhaps Hezbollah fighting Israel to what was  considered a "draw" by many has given them a boost of confidence (though the situations would be completely and totally different, this scenario being much in the Israeli's favor).

But Iran will only be able to provide limited support to Syria at best. They are probably just using them as their useful idiots while maintaining limited risk to themselves. If Syria actually attempts to move out and capture/hold the Golan Heights, then they are really gonna get the dogshit kicked out of them. Unlike the light infantry type Hezbollah fighters who'd had 10 years to dig tunnel systems connected to fighting positions, pre-position tons of war materials, and fighting on their own turf....a Syrian invasion against a force like Israel with complete air dominance and capable ground forces would be a total turkey shoot. If they are really that fucking stupid to attempt this again, then let them. That'll just leave them crippled yet again for about 20 years and eliminate one more shithole that we have to deal with. Syria never could accomplish this same goal in previous attempts, even when allied with other Middle Eastern nations like Egypt. And in those days there was much greater parity in terms of equipment. So if multiple Arab countries simultaneously attacking at once couldn't do the job in the past, how could Syria  basically going it alone work, when the gap between weapons systems now makes Israel vastly more superior than before?

Good.

With Syria supposedly preparing for war with Israel in August I would hope the Israelis would get themselves geared up for a fight.

Hmmm... Advertise a time?

I would be worried NOW and I would also be woried about an attack from a direction other then what they are advertising!

If I was going to break in your house and I expected you to be armed and expecting it I wouldn't say I will be there at 10PM and at the front door, unless I wanted you standing at the front door while I broke in the back door OR unless I had a small nuke and I wanted you to be close enough to the door to roast you!

I am sure they have people smarter then I looking and thinking but we live in dangerous time!  Anybody got a bet if Iran has a nuke or if Syria could have got one from somewhere?

Pretty sure the Israelis don't want fallout in thier backyard.  They should try to help along a coup in Syria.
