I am taking my company IQ test and this question comes up ![]() John and Mary Hazlitt left the airport taxi and carried their bags into their high-rise apartment building. They admired the gifts they had brought back - an illustrated book for themselves; a stylish business suit for their daughter Helen; and the Scotch whiskey John's boss had asked for. John and Mary most likely:

Quoted: the answer's 'cant tell', as nothing you're told would be sufficient to draw any of those conclusions. BTW - they allow you internet access during the test????? Maybe they should take it themselves. of course not thank goodness for the google search feature for all those weird words like "ruminate" |

Maybe they should take it themselves. You know that ADMIRED the gifts they purchased, and that they actually went through the act of purchasing the alcohol AND bringing it back from overseas. I am inclined to go with 'Encouraged'. |

Encouraged
1. They were liberal enough to let their daughter become something other than a barefoot and pregnant hill-billy and obviously encouraged her success 2. Someone who discourages the drinking of alcohol would not know that all Scotch's are Whiskeys but not all Whiskeys are scotch. They would just say give me that bottle that says Scotch on it. 3. They are obviously successful enough to live in a high-rise apartment building in a city that is also large enough to have an airport (think New York, Chicago, etc.). 4. Most cities with hi-rise apartment buildings are typically more liberal and cater to a group of people that would be more likely to enjoy alcohol. |

So... how did you answer this question? |

But you're still wrong Just out of curiosity then, what's the answer and why? Is it discouraged because they now have an illustrated book? Could it be that the book is either a children's book or an illustrated Bible indicating their family and Christian values? |

Its OBVIOUS....
They ENCOURAGE drinking, else they would not have purchased the alcohol in the first place. Also, it says that they ADMIRED their gifts, and the alcohol was one of the gifts that they were admiring. DUH
this, glad I read through or i'd have typed the same damn thing. |

So don't think I'm calling you dumb. Just a harmless jab.
2nd - I think the answer is 'cant tell', because I don't feel there's enough info provided to tell what their views on alcohol are. They could encourage, discourage, or be complete nuetral on the subject of alcohol and still buy a bottle of booze for a boss that asked for it. Just my opinion. |

They want to gain a better understanding of your problem solving ability and abstract thinking. The reader should be searching for clues within the context of the piece offered in an effort to determine the best answer choice. A person lacking intelligence (as measured by such methods of testing) might struggle with making such connections. ...But with an IQ of 137, I'm sure you already knew that. |

Also, they could admire the well-crafted artistry of the bottle and label and still not care for drinking. |

John and Mary most likely:
About all I can tell from the above is that John is gay and either still in the closet or Mary is ok with it, why else would would they buy an illustrated book for themselves and not have bought a good bottle of booze for themselves while at the liquor store? (unless it is a sex book, in which case John is having problems in the sack - and he is still a fag for not buying a bottle for himself) |
| Not enough information, it could be "can't tell". You cannot conclude they encouraged drinking, they may have been admiring the artwork on the bottle, not its contents. Most such questions are stupid as there is often more than one right answer, unlike the "complete the numerical series" or identify the next pattern in the series type questions. |

My guess: Discouraged.
They didn't get a bottle for themselves or for their daughter (so probably not "encouraged"), but they were willing to get one for a friend (so probably not "forbade"). Of course, the only reasonable answer is "can't tell" because you can't really, but I'm trying to take the test. |

Sure, I can go with 'can't tell' if the question is their own drinking or their daughter's drinking, but just "encouraging drinking" ... yep, they are. |

i recently had to take one of the most pointless exams in my life to get my degree. it was little more of a transparent attempt by librarians to justify continued state funding.
The following is very close to the actual question asked: Jane wants to find information on XYZ. Aside from the library, where should she look? a) The World Wide Web b) The internet c) both i shit you not

While similar in some contexts, I personally feel that there is a world of difference here. Might someone feel coerced in in some form or fashion if asked by their boss (an authority figure) to bring back such an item? I honestly don't know. |

John and Mary most likely:
The answer is discouraged (or at least that is the most likely answer). The key phrase is "boss had asked for." If they forbade drinking alcohol, they would not have purchased the alcohol even if asked. If they encouraged drinking, then the boss would not have needed to ask for it. The answer Can't tell is obviously wrong because smart people always know the answer (just like I know the answer to this question), and since this is an intelligence test, to be smart, you must know the answer if you are going to pass. ![]() |

extrapolating more information then is given.... and coming up with the wrong answer |

e) John is a limp-wristed fag who needs to grow a spine. Mary wears her hair too tight and needs to get it stuck in her butt. Helen is going to live with a guy in a band until she graduates and it isn't cool anymore. She'll regret her tramp stamp later in life.
ETA: Helen's boyfriend could also be a "poet". |
