So when we called al-qaeda "al-qaeda" were we endorsing their claim to be "the base"? Or when we call hezbollah "hezbollah" does that mean that we agree that they are in fact "the party of god"?
The term levant wasn't made up by some islamist nutjobs. My family is from syria and lebanon (christians, btw), I am of "levantine" descent, because my family originates in the area of the eastern mediterranean. Was England in on some secret islamist conspiracy back in the 1500s when they formed the English Levant Company to foster trade in the area? |

Islamic state of Iraq and Syria
and Islamic state of Iraq and Levant = same people, Al Qaeda The administration is changing the wording of who they are to confuse people, because according to the administration, Al Qaeda is all but defeated and on the run/falling apart... not so. Also, calling them ISIL, confuses people that we provided weapons to ISIS during the Syrian conflict This is my understanding of it, but I am not a credible source |

Quoted: I have wondered why the media is saying isil. Yet other stories it's Isis. Is this explanation definitive or a stretch? The "L" and "S" in both names have roughly similar meanings from translation. the "S" doesn't stand for Syria, it stands for "ash-Sham/al-Sham" which pretty much means the eastern Mediterranean/Levant in Arabic. |

If I recall correctly from my arabic classes in college years ago, isn't levant a term from the french something to do with the sun rising from the east around there from their perspective? And this levant discussion makes me want some grape leaf wraps and hummace |

Quoted:
ISIS and ISIL have morphed into the Islamic State Group or IS on second reference for most talking points and media stories. This. They're taking a page out of Prince's book. From "The artist formerly known as Prince" to "The Artist" Also, saying the Levant in fact actually includes the threat to Israel. ISIL/ISIS has as their primary goal creating an islamic state in whatever area they can get. Isreal is certainly on their list, as is the rest of the levant. |

I don't think most of them have a fuqqing clue what they are saying, they just think it sounds cool. (pok-EEE-ston)
Kind of like most of the talking-head idiots who were going around enunciating "Tee-in-NON-men Square" about 20 years ago. It was like they got paid extra to mispronounce it just because they thought it made them sound like they were more educated than anyone else.

The Levant today consists of the island of Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, and part of southern Turkey (the former Aleppo Vilayet).
This is the area they (ISIL) wants control of. Calling them ISIS is understating their mission. I despise the Jugged Eared One as much as the next ARFCOMMER, but FFS he's using the correct term. |

My grandmother (came here from Lebanon, by way of Egypt if I recall correctly) spoke French fluently until the day she died. |
