All they need are some sympathetic pilots to make use of those birds. Al-Qaeda flight training might not have included landings, but there are probably a lot of muslim ex-military, airline and civil aviation pilots, and you don't need a whole lot of them to make use of a handful of aircraft.
spares and competent jet-rated ground crews will probably be harder to come by than pilots who could check out on on ex-soviet warbirds. Tabqa apparently based a squadron of Mig21 fighters and a squadron of Mi8 helos |

Here's the problem... While your average ISIS Derka probably couldn't make use of a Stinger or Sidewinder, they have the $$$$$$$$ to find someone who can to work it for them.
Once you have $$$$$, you can get expertise... Then all you need is access to material. They have all of that. |

They'll fuck this up. Even the most retarded of government leadership in the US would be able to get a few operational planes in the air, and get some attack capability with what they have, yet they can't seem to do anything with the vast sums of money and hardware they've acquired. (In regards to air power.)
I'm sure they'll do something terrible with it soon, but how they've managed to not get anything operational with what they already have astounds me. However, maybe I'm missing something. |

No, I was saying a bunch of goat fuckers aren't going to have any luck shooting MANPADs at a drone cruising at 25,000 ft performing reconnaissance. Probably won't have a whole lot of luck shooting down any type of manned military aircraft that are flying combat sorties. I was trying to convey that they will have better luck shooting those MANPADs at airliners that are taking off or coming in on a landing approach. ETA: After reading what I said again, I have no clue how you got that I said "drones fly lower than airliners." |
