Here is my problem. In Dec 2001 I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my left knee. I rehabbed that. In June of 2003 I had My left knee scoped for a torn meniscus and scar tissue. I rehabbed that. In Nov 2005 I was hit head on while driving to work by a 16 yr old kid. I got a broken Tibia ( top of Tibia close to knee cap) and a torn up knee, in the same leg and knee, the right this time. I had surgery and rehabbed that as best I could. Both knees have arthritis and the Doc said I would need them both replaced in 5 yrs. I am 44 yrs old. Now for my current problem. I had ankle fusion surgery(Subtalor fusion) on my left ankle in Jan 2008. I am in therapy and have finally got off crutches, but have to wear an articulated brace. This injury was due to maybe the wreck or older something or other I just ain't sure. The fusion is not fully healed and I walk with a bad limp and a lot of pain. Anyway I have done nothing for a long while and am in terrible shape. I have a treadmill I can no longer use and can't bend my ankle so biking is out. I have a smith machine but can't squat. I have two incline benches and free weights and a full set of dumbbells. I once was in decent shape, but not now. So, my Question is, What can I do to get some kind of cardio and also strength training on my legs. I realize that my Diet has to change and I can Fix that but the cardio is what I can't figure out. I am very frustrated and pissed off at the world right now and feel like shit all the time. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My Dr. is only worried about my ankle right now and getting that as good as possible. I am pretty low right now. Thanks for any advice given. |
ANY time joint damage is an issue, consider water sports. Swimming, water walking, etc are excellent ways to get your heart rate up, without stressing the joints or tendons. Hey! Want to get wealthy? Start a pool-based WEIGHT LIFTING class! I get 10% of your first year's gross for the idea! |
Yea, thats kind of the only thing I could come up with. My In-Laws have a pool I can use so that will work out. The pool-based weight lifting class, Hmm, might suck in the Fall, Winter, and Spring here in Ohio. Thank you for the reply! |

Try your locak "Y". Ours has the floating dumbells for the indoor pool. We have an instructor that teaches a weight's workout in the pool for injured and senior citizens. They use the resistance of the floating "weight" against the water. That class is usually always full. Hope you get healed up. |
I would like to try the YMCA thing but I live about 30 miles from the closest one. I am going to start swimming at the In-Laws everyday. I am just at the point where I am sick of being cooped up and not able to do what I normally do. I am pretty much an outdoor type person be it hunting, shooting or traveling and the last 8 months has thrown a wrench into all of that. I think all the inactivity is the biggest part of the problem with making me frustrated. Thanks for the replies all. |
