This "non- Asimov" movie already looks boring. But I have a question about the car that Will Smith's character drives. It is an Audi "prototype", and AudiUSA has been advertising it very heavily, with large ads in the USA Today and on TV. So, this Audi "prototype" exists now, and the movie takes place in the year 2035. Does that mean that, in 2035, Will' Smith's character is driving a "classic" or even "historical" Audi, model year 2004/05?? |
You can't really cal it a 'departure', as it in truth was never of the book to begin with. An interview with the director had a comment about how he had a script for a futuristic type thriller that he really liked, but then heard that the rights to Asimov's works was up, so he snapped I, Robot, and reworked the script to fit in with the themes of the stories in I, Robot. Slap the name on, and there you go..... |

I read a review today that said credits stated "Suggested by I. Asimov's I, Robot. That doesn't sound good. The review said the movie did follow the book's Three Rules of Robotics, and that one was accused of murder. But hinted that was about as close to the book as the movie comes. I haven't read the book and may see the movie. I defiantly would see it if it closely followed the book. I've read Asmov's Foundation series and very much liked the man's visions. But his righting was/is very dry and at times can be difficult to remain enthused about continuing the read. But what an imagination he had. |

SPOILER: I haven't read the book. Two questions for those who have: 1. Do characters use the term "canner" as a slur for robots, or is that some stupid movie persons reference to "ni@@er" 2. In this movie, a giant computer brain that links up to a bunch of robots figures out a way around the three rules by thinking it will have robots take over the world and prevent us from harming each other ... and if a few get killed in the process it's an acceptable trade off. I hope there is nothing like that in a book with the reputation of I robot. I'm going to read the book this weekend and see whats up. |

For Red_Beard: That kind of story line was used in one of the original Judge Dredd comics several years ago. As only living people committed crimes, Judge Death (in a parallel universe), and a few other zombie-like allies, murdered every living person on the planet. Then they tried to move over here. Stopped of course. |
Is that guy still around? Jeez |
The Foundation books, though quite good, were indeed a bit dry. The robot books were definately quicker reads and seemed to "flow" a bit smoother plot-wise. |

Much better than I thought it would be Two thumbs up I've read a ton of Asimov's stuff, including many robot books. No it doesn't track a book, but Asimov often did explore the ways that the Laws could end up in a quandary. In the movie, the Laws are NOT violated by any robot that was subject to the Laws. |
I was wondering if they were going to use that particular Alan parsons tune. I never get tired of listening to his stuff. |
yup he is, I actualy saw the dude in concert a few years ago. |

The three laws of robotics NEVER worked, they were ALWAYS intended to fail. They were a plot convention. www.asimovlaws.com/articles/archives/2004/07/robot_oppressio.html Unfortunately there are people outthere who think that they are Holy Scripture regarding how to develop human like AI. |

I thought it was great! Neat story and great effects. At the begining Will Smith puts on a pair of what he calls " vintage 2004 shoes".. heh heh... They also take into account inflation.... he buys 2 beers for $48. So start saving!!! Oh and by the way theres a ton of shooting but I didn't see ONE single mag change by anyone the entire movie! Gee, that album is old. Can't believe I was in the 10th grade when it came out. The music aged well however and remains my favorite Alan Parsons album. slightly edging out the Poe one. |

I was actually dragged to the movie by a friend and his daughter, and I was very skeptical. The previews looked boring, and I feared the worst. I can gladly say I was pleasantly surprised! The acting was decent, and the special effects were great, plus it had its comedic moments. I would have no problem seeing this movie again, and I will definitely buy it on DVD. |
