but I thought we spoke English here in America.

I went with my to the local produce market to buy some grapes for my mom and cereal for myself.  I approached the guy sweeping the floor what aisle the ceral is.  

He replies "Don't speak English."

I go and find another floor sweeper who is able to tell me where the ceral is.  

I don't understand it.

thats fine if he can't speak english as long as he enjoys sweeping floors.

I grew up in the southern 'burbs of Chicago where Italian and Polish are the primary languages ... and that was 30 years ago.

The Neutral Observer's family spoke German in the home when he was a child, but every last one could speak English perfectly with your choice of American accent.  Germans are very big on accents.

EDIT:

There is no excuse not to know the language of the country you are living in.  It's on the same level as willfully gouging out your own eyes - a handicap.
