Google never has a doodle for American holidays....
Oh wait, they do today.

This year's 4th of July theme is exceptionally lame. Agreed. No shit. Just for those of you who don't understand the source of today's Google doodle: "This Land Is Your Land" is one of the United States' most famous folk songs. Its lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie in 1940 based on an existing melody, in critical response to Irving Berlin's "God Bless America", which Guthrie considered unrealistic and complacent. Tired of hearing Kate Smith sing it on the radio, he wrote a response originally called "God Blessed America for Me". Guthrie varied the lyrics over time, sometimes including more overtly political verses in line with his sympathetic views of communism, than appear in recordings or publications. So, hooray for Google tipping it's hat to American Independence.

| Yeah, quoting a communist on Independence Day, classy. And to be clear , Guthrie was not a communist in the arfcom calls everybody who is slightly liberal a commie sense, but in the card carrying, Marx worshiping, anticapitolist, wrote a regular column for a Daily Worker sense. |

Google doin' something special for today? I'm not seeing it...
It would help if you weren't using the UK site.....just sayin :) |

It's really too bad that their service works so good. They have the best maps and search by far and it really bums me out. I try really hard not to use them. Not to mention, I hate Apple so I bought an Android tablet which I love and guess who owns Android and runs the app store? Google. |

http://www.google.com/logos/2012/4th_july-12-hp.png kind of lame, but not really unpatriotic
ETA: look at bing, it's nothing.
There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me; Sign was painted, it said private property; But on the back side it didn't say nothing; This land was made for you and me. Better that corporations remain unpolitical than make gaffes quoting communists on a 4th of July tribute. I don't necessarily think Google did it on purpose, people tend to have a fairly shallow understanding music in general and Woody Guthrie in particular. We used to sing This Land in elementary school and leave out the political verses and people assumed it was patriotic. But Guthrie was overtly political and anticapitalist, and Google should, assuming it was unintentional, be more careful. |

Google UK is a little early on that white flag. Quoted: Google doin' something special for today? I'm not seeing it... ![]() |

Pretty much what I cam here to post. Google continues to send out clear messages of what their political ideology consists of. |

Quoted: i like google and android products. That said, i more often than not, disagree with their corporate decisions on celebrations. This year's 4th of July theme is exceptionally lame. +1 As recently noted in other threads, Google shopping will no longer allow firearms related content/advertising/stores. At least that my understanding. I use Bing all the time, everyday, and am very happy with the results. I've never discovered that I missed relevant content when cross-checking my search results on Google. Also, the birds-eye view mapping feature is awesome, and I use it a lot everyday for work. Lastly, Bing has a beautiful interface, with interesting interactive photos as the backdrop. For the past 3+ years, Bing has been my search engine of choice. YMMV, IMHO, etc |
