Dropped my transmission pan just now and got some two inch long metal slivers and chunks.
History: had transmission rebuilt 6 years ago. They never got it right and i cursed them and told cottman transmission to pound sand. I put a manual valve body in to try and eliminate the problematic third to fourth shift. Well I was drunk and stripped the transmission where it bolts up. Shit So four years ago I put in a tci streetfighter 700r4. Worked fine for two and a half months then one day leaving a stoplight it just died and all I had was reverse. It was under warranty so i had to pull it back out and pay to have it shipped back to them. They found out my planetary gearset had broken. Must've been a metal flaw. I got it back and installed. About a year ago my first to second shift started shuttering when it shifted but wasn't too bad. I haven't been driving it much cause I got my bike. The shift started getting worse a month ago and i stopped driving it. Today I decided to drop the pan and change the filter. Maybe it was clogged from break in and since I haven't changed it I decided it was worth a shot. I'm hoping that the metal is just left over that worked its way down from the first tci failure due to them not cleaning it out well. I swear if this one goes I'm putting in the work and installing a manual T56 six speed. I'm done with this bullshit. |

I know, and i was using my new cordless impact to run the bolts up doh. I've never messed up a customers vehicle though Haha. |

The Automatic transmission is great, I've never had a problem with any that I've owned.
Frankly Manual transmissions are for yuppies and posuers who want to show off how cool they are. In my opinion there is no reason why that in the year of our Lord Two thousand and Eleven a man should have to be responsible for matching the speed of the engine to the wheels. That mundane task can be delegated to a relatively simple piece of equipment. |
|
I've got 192k on a GM 4L60e, and it's still shifting and performing fine. My personal experience with Autos has been great, the only one that's ever failed me was the 3 speed in my '91 ex-rental Lumina back when I was po. Most automatic transmission failures I personally know about are either Chrysler related, or in cars that are known to be abused and neglected by their owners. Manuals are often fun, but are just as often a pain in the ass in the same way that a chucked drill was a pain. I expect lots of chest beating and Driver vs driver stuff to follow... |

Don't start a bitching thread about something you screwed up while drunk. It removes all legitimacy to your rant. |

This one is a 700r4. The non electronic predecessor to the 4l60e. I got 150k on the original. Hmm maybe the nitrous oxide isn't helping this last one Haha. But that's why I bought a beefed up tci. |
| well, somebody's driving it like he stole it. Dude, that's a lot of transmission carnage. I only have one question. Did you replace or at least flush the torque converter in between any of this destruction? the tranny may only hold a couple quarts of fluid, but there's a couple gallons up in the TC that could be full of badness and adding to your trouble. |

Manuals are not so much fun when I had to sit in traffic. Given an open road, they're great, but most of my driving is not so carefree. They are extremely helpful when somebody wants to borrow your truck, though. |

My current truck has a 168,000 miles on the original brakes and clutch. I never have had my transmission serviced. Yep, manual transmissions are dumb. |
|
Since I cleared the UAW junk out of the garage, haven't had a problem with any automatic transmissions. The Germans & Japanese build awesome automatics for their cars and SUV's.
Our Bavarian Motor Works sport sedan has possibly the finest automatic transmission yet. Even under hard acceleration you can barely feel the shift points. Used to have an old '67 GMC Suburban that had the 350TH... replaced it with an ever worse 400TH. Finally replaced the whole thing with a 4Runner. No transmission problems since. |
|
So wait - let me see if I can get this straight: There are millions of cars sold every year, virtually all of them with automatic transmissions. You ought to think that if automatic transmissions are the devil, they'd stop making them by now. COMPARED TO: The automatic transmissions YOU installed, some of them in an incorrect manner, in a customized vehicle, using rebuilt transmissions one of which had a faulty metal part (that could ONLY happen in an automatic transmission, not anywhere else), and now I'm supposed to conclude that ALL automatic transmissions are evil? ![]() |

Although if your in a a vehicle doing a lot of utility work they make a lot of sense. For a commuter, or basically any car where your going to be driving it exclusively a manual quickly becomes a very boring chore which can turn itself into an expensive repair if you slack off. Again, there really isn't any reason to exert that much additional effort and concentration (which is a limited resource I'll remind you) when you don't have to. Anyone who claims that doing so grants a degree of edification or dare I say Enlightenment (I've seen many make the claim) is being a yuppie or a posuer. |

You know what, one guy you're right. I forgot to flush the torque converter. I may go just get a new one and install that my next day off. The one I have stalls higher than it should anyways. |

You have failed, muahahahah I dont consider myself more "manly" or "superior" for enjoying a manual transmission. No, I have my tobacco pipe for that Its something that I enjoy. Ive been doing it long enough that I dont even really think about it anymore and stop and go is no worse for me than driving an auto. |
|
Remember to flush the cooling lines also.
Also, if the torque converter does not have a drain plug in it, you should drill a small hole an tap it, then use a brass plug in it. Consult a GM high performance site about the operation, I do not want to give you advice on how to drill through the lock-up clutch in your converter.

I have an automated manual in my car and it's not quite as much fun as a standard, but it's fucking light-years ahead of a traditional automatic. I'm driving a normal automatic in a rental car right now while traveling for work and it's fucking awful. It really makes me appreciate my DSG. ETA: Driving a manual in traffic never really bothered me. I've gone at least a mile in "stop and go" traffic without touching anything but the gas pedal, with a manual transmission. Hell, I've probably gone half a mile without touching any pedals. Just take your time and roll along in 1st or 2nd. If you're not in a hurry to kiss the ass of the car in front of you, it's a lot easier. |

It's the most often overlooked problem with auto trans failures, especially the ones with lockup clutches in them. |

Meh, I do not miss manuals at all anymore. When I was younger and poorer, a manual was all I had because that made the price point better. Now that I am older and more flush with money, automatics are were it is at for me.
I do not miss all the foot and hand jocking of the clutch and shifter and just like the motion of one foot hitting the accelerator and I go. There is a reason Ford and Toyota dropped manuals from their full size 1/2 ton trucks, they just did not sell well and in the case of Ford, was only like 6% of their sales. |

I'm having trouble finding one. |

I've driven cars with manual transmissions my whole life. Now, I'm driving my first-ever auto. There is no question as to which system is better for ME: Auto > manual in stop-and-go city traffic... Manual > auto everywhere else. To each their own. Not sure why people who love standards have to boast about it and people who can't drive standards make up for the fact by denouncing them as if their time is too valuable to "row their gears". LOL! Keep this in mind: The majority of Americans are lazy, hence the 99%ers... is it any wonder why 99% of the vehicles on the road now are automatics? ![]() |
