From experience......First, determine the cost of replacement cartridges and their useful lifespan.

I have a Minolita 1600.

Color Laser. IIRC, it was around $225

Minolta Magicolor 1600W

Laser cartridges run a little more but don't dry out if you don't use them like inkjets will.

FWIW,

Honestly, ink-jet printers are a huge ripoff.  Do you really need to print that much color?

Like the other poster said, color laser printers are nice, but I don't know that they'll do true "photo-quality" prints.

I'd get a nice cheap b/w laser printer:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16828115639

Then just send your photo-quality prints to Walgreens/Wal-Mart/whoever online.

tl;dr - ink-jet printers suck.

I take it you're not an HP fan.

It alos will be used for everyday b&w printing

I'd agree with him that HP's consumer-grade ink-jets are garbage.

If you're set on an ink-jet, I know quite a few people that have Canon PIXMA series printers, and they seem to be decent.  Albeit, a money pit when it comes to consumables...

My Epson Photo R1800 + CIS system makes color prints cheap...it's not wireless, but it'll let you print (oversize) photos, CD/DVD, etc.  Using a CIS system, the cost per print becomes very reasonable.

It had sure better be a LaserJet

in seriousness
HP printers are now by and large made by Lexmark (Color Laser Models)

Dell sells Rebranded HPs that are rebranded Lexmarks

Dell is also cheaper than the other 2

Color Lasers have reached the price point where they are disposable - if it needs anything more than toner (possibly drum) get a new one

I had three HP products in a fucking row die on day +-91 and all three times HP refused to even talk to me before I gave them a credit card number so they could bill me $25.00.

The printer in question was shut down in the middle of a print job because I realized that I was printing an entire 1140 page book instead of the 2 pages I wanted.

It never printed another thing after that and HP couldn't care less!

Based on what I've heard on the internet, someone here should be able to fix the one you have now.
