I have vista. There is no background, start button, taskbar, or anything. Just white.
I've been doing everything using the task manager and typing it in. What the heck is wrong and how do I fix it? I have already tried to restore, didn't work since the computer didn't automatically save any dates like it was supposed to. (dunno why) |

Or starting in safe mode? |

Did you try rebooting using "last known good configuration"? You'll have to explain that to me, I'm the one guy my age thats not real good with computers.
Or starting in safe mode?Haven't tried that, what would I do when I'm in safe mode? Quoted:
Go to the task manager, new process, type in "explorer" and see what happens. I'm not familiar with Vista, as I run Macs at home and XP at work, but that's where I'd start. I tried to do that, and it all came back, but immediately stopped working again. |

I wonder if you've got a virus of some sort, but I'm not really familiar enough with Vista to know. Sorry... |

Well it was working fine Thursday night, but when I booted it up a couple hours ago to start on my final exam paper due monday, of course it does this BS. |

Reboot computer, repeatedly hit "F8" key before the windows screen comes up - you should get a list of options including "last known good configuration", "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc. I'm assuming that this works in Vista (I use XP). |

If not, as posted above, try this; http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistaperformance/thread/c297fbe9-7ed4-45b1-90a6-532b09b1bdac I would be unable to give a specific cause for the blank screen. I am glad the "System Restore" helped out. Below I have added another link that should be able to help with the cause of that problem and also gives information on the system restore. Please let me know if you are still having any problems.
How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista: The System File Checker tool The System Restore tool http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212/ Hello,
Let's try a clean boot to disable 3rd party services and see if you can boot normally. We will set this up in safe mode, then boot normally. Follow the steps below to place your computer in “clean boot”. Please first boot in safe mode by restarting your computer and press F8 before the Windows screen comes up. Choose safe mode from the menu. Once safe mode loads: * Click the Start orb on your Desktop * Type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. * On the General tab, click Selective Startup. * Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box. * Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All. * Click OK. When you are prompted, click Restart. Let the computer boot up normally. If this does resolve the issue, then see the following Microsoft Article on “Clean boot” and the section “How to determine what is causing the problem” to determine which program or service maybe causing the issue. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796 How to set your computer back, to boot normal: * Click the Start orb on your Desktop * In the Start Search box. Type msconfig, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue. Click the General tab. * Click Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services, and then click OK. * When you are prompted, click Restart to restart the computer. |

Ok, So I think the problem is with this "GodMode" thing I did last week. Problem is, I can't delete it. How do you delete it?
I read somewhere I need to go to safe mode, then command prompt and delete it there. How do I do this? Any help will be much appreciated. |

If you haven't been able to delete the folder with any of the previous procedures, try the following:
Boot into safe mode (safe mode with command prompt if possible - if not go to the command line by typing cmd in the search/run line in the start menu after booting to normal safe mode) move to your desktop folder: should be C:\users\"your user name here"\desktop, using the old DOS command CD (change directory, i.e. "cd c:\;users\...." If you don't know the user name, you can go one step at a time, with "cd c:" followed by "cd users" and at the users directory type "dir /ad" to find the subdirectories (folders in windows) and continue from there look at the directories under the desktop - command is "dir/ad". Your godmode folder will have the name you see on the desktop (e.g. Godmode) followed by a period, and a long string enclosed in curly brackets - make sure you write it down completely and correctly, noting that the name could wrap to the next line. next, remove your godmode directory: command is "rmdir GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}, where you replace GodMode with whatever your actual name is. The serial in the brackets *should* be as you see it here. alternatively, if you can't open the command prompt, you can run the whole procedure from the run/search box, though you need to know the entire path. From the run or search box you would type rmdir c:\users\username\desktop\godfoldername.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} that should do it - reboot into normal mode and see if you got it right. |
