howdy guys, im trying to connect to our wireless internet via our ipod touch. it recognizes the wireless connection but when i enter the password it doesnt do anything.

any help?

also what kind of sweet programs can i get for this thing?
12/28/2008 10:22:37 AM EDT
[#1]
Mine started up as soon as the password was entered.  You don't have a signal indicator in the top-left of your screen?

When you get it all figured out, hit the app store.

iBoobs is still not available.

under the wi-fi networks this is what i see

wi-fi is on

linksys1 (our wifi router) is shown. there is a lock next to it and the signal is good

you click on linksys1 and it asks for a password

i enter in our password and nothing happens. the join button in the lower right will not light up.

any ideas?
12/28/2008 10:31:29 AM EDT
[#3]
On mine you have to have at least eight characters entered in the password before "JOIN" will light up.
12/28/2008 10:32:36 AM EDT
[#4]
im finding that out too. my router password is 6.
12/28/2008 10:32:41 AM EDT
[#5]
Again, do you have MAC filtering in use on the router?
12/28/2008 10:35:31 AM EDT
[#6]
not sure? how do i check that
12/28/2008 10:38:03 AM EDT

Go into the router setup
Click 'Wireless'
Click 'Wireless MAC Filter'
See if it's enabled... if so, you need to add the MAC address of your iTouch to the list of PC that can access the network.

While you're in there, check the type of security you have... WPA/WPA2, etc...

That is on 'Wireless' / 'Wireless Security'

ok i found the wireless network connection status. dont see anything about MAC. did find the security. its WPA2-personal

Are you connecting from your iTouch with WPA2?
12/28/2008 10:51:25 AM EDT
[#12]
Subscribing.

My son's iPod Touch will connect to our home WEP encrypted just fine, but is apparently having trouble connecting to my parents' WPA encrypted network while he is there visiting. I got tired of trying to troubleshoot it over the phone with either a 10 year old kid or a 65 year old woman, but I'll be there in a couple days to celebrate Christmas on that side of the family and pick up kids.

[#13]
Turn off the security (make it an open network) temporarily on your Router and see if you can connect with the iPod Touch then.

Reduce the variables, corner the one that is the problem, shoot it in the head.

As far as I know, the touch only does WEP, not WPA.  Also, it is very very easy to fat-finger a password on a Touch, go slowly.

My network uses a hexidecimal password with easy to type number sequences followed by easy to type letter sequences (ABCDEF)

? how do you check that?

sorry but i know jack shit about this stuff.

Was jsut doing some researching online, and it sounds like if you change the "beacon interval" in your router from 100ms to 75 ms, that may fix it.

I won't be able to contribute any personal experiences for a few mroe days.

[#16]
To address a previous comment, the iPhone (and probably iTouch) do support WPA2... that's what I'm running here at home.

If you're using WPA2, I believe it is case sensitive on the password.  Check that as well.

i was reading my papers that came with the router. it said for me to adjust any of its properties i am suppose to type in my IP address in the web bar. from there i can access the router.

how do i find my ip address ?

Well, to adjust the settings of the router you use the IP address of the router, not your IP address.

The default is:  192.168.1.1
12/28/2008 11:23:22 AM EDT
[#20]
Open your Internet browser and click in the address bar.
Type 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and then press enter.
The default password for a Linksys router is admin.
12/28/2008 11:26:57 AM EDT
[#21]
it asked for a user name and password. i entered my router name and password and it didnt work.

admin/admin

If that doesn't work, it has been changed.
12/28/2008 11:40:21 AM EDT
[#23]
ok that worked.
12/28/2008 11:46:59 AM EDT
[#24]
Now check and see if you have MAC filtering.
12/28/2008 11:47:35 AM EDT
[#25]
ok there is a MAC address clone selection. it is disabled. is that what i am looking for?

No.

Look at my post above regarding MAC filtering.  It tells you where to look.

Was it turned on?  If not, you didn't need to turn it on.

What was checked (if anything) on that screen?

What are you using for the password?

If you are using WPA/WPA2 it should be a LONG string about 26 characters.
12/28/2008 12:00:56 PM EDT
[#33]
i have a password that is 6 characters long and then a security key that is 10 characters long. ive tried entering both.

In the router management pages, select 'Wireless' then 'Wireless Security'

-what is the Security Mode?
-do you have a WPA shared key?  Is that what you're entering?
12/28/2008 12:04:16 PM EDT
[#35]
security mode is WPA2 PERSONAL

That looks like the issue...  you have to have a passphrase in there to connect.

You seem to have a different model Linksys than I do.  Give me the model number and I'll pull the manual... then tell you how to generate your key.
12/28/2008 12:07:49 PM EDT
[#37]
model is WRT110
12/28/2008 12:11:38 PM EDT
[#38]
OK, Enter a Passphrase of 8-63 characters and click 'ok'.  That should generate a key for you.

Make up the passphrase

Wow... sounds like your laptop never had a key in use either.

Once you generate the key... that is the password you use to connect to your network.
12/28/2008 12:23:24 PM EDT
[#41]
how do you restart the router? its all messed up and wont let me access the net.

From the manual...

There are two ways to reset the Router’s
factory defaults. Either press and hold the Reset
Button for approximately five seconds, or restore
the defaults from Administration > Factory
Defaults in the Router’s web-based utility.

ok  i got it reset. now i gotta start from the beginning. what security setting should i choose?

WPA2 with TKIP.  That's about the most secure you can get on that router.

And change the Admin password too...

After you enter a passphrase it should generate the key.  That is the key/password you use when you connect to the router.  This will also include your laptop.
12/28/2008 12:49:28 PM EDT
[#45]
ok were back at square 1. i got the router up and running. my security is enabled. i changed my admin password and got a security key.
12/28/2008 12:52:47 PM EDT
[#46]
OK, now try to connect your iTouch using that 26-character passkey.

It should be only 0-9 and A-F (hexadecmial).

Let me know if that works.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I want to put videos on my Touch but I need to get them into iTunes first.

I've tried Adding the files to the library, click and dragging...but...nothing happens.  How do I get non itune movies on to my touch?

I believe they have to be converted to an Apple compatible format.

Someone else here should know.  But I would suggest a new thread so you get their attention.
