I was backing out of the driveway today and saw this critter strolling around the top of the snowbank by the mailbox.  It was the size of a large cat, and I don't know what it is:

Its tail was almost a foot long, and it looked like a pink rat's tail with no hair.

First thought was baby chupacabra, but no, its eyes weren't glowing.  It actually looked like a raccoon with the mange, but I don't think raccoons get the mange.

What is this bad boy?

I've never known someone who didn't know what an opposum was.  I've had an opposum as a pet (they're actually very cute and friendly when tame), and there are a lot of wild ones around here, so yeah, that's definitely an opposum.  Virginia opposum, to be exact.  The only marsupial in North America.

Well now you do, and it's a pleasure to meet you.  My son's going to school in Bloomington and he's coming home for spring break tomorrow –– maybe I should have waited and asked him.

It is a Possum. It inhabits the same ecological niche as the common Norway rat. Being a marsupial, it is actually more closely related to kangaroos and platypusses than to rats.

Still the ugliest vertebrate in the whole world.

I see them often enough here in Texas....and often enough close up. When I do to the latter, I say to them in a twit voice,

"Mmmmmm, okay, I'll just walk over here this way and you go your own way. I've been in (mammal) lab, I know what your teeth look like!"
