I did some exploring in the Portland Oregon area today.  Look what we found attached to a tree along the trail... a skull inside a home-made wooden cage... OK, I give up.... what on earth is that about????

Anyone recognize the skull... no don't tell me it's your mother-in-law... I'm serious... anyone know what animal it is/was????

Well that is mildly disturbing.  Is it a bear?

just a guess
a person left it there to have bugs and birds clean it. In a cage to keep coons and stuff from dragging it off.

What ever it is its probably being cleaned by nature for someone to keep as a trophy, i have seen lots of Deer skulls done like this, up a tree to keep Coyotes from getting it and in a cage to keep other predators from dragging it away.
I have never saw anyone build a cage for it, usually just on a high limb attached to a chain.

That's pretty freaking awesome.

And yeah, it's a coyote skull.

Not even close to a big cat skull, or a bear.  Those are shorter and broader.

Canine dentition so dog, wolf or coyote.  The orbit looks messed up, maybe from a bullet.  Not a cat of any kind.

Song dog for sure. The cage keeps stuff from taking it away and lets the bugs at it.  OR it could be a trail marker for the Arizona demonoid convention.....watch yer cornhole out there bud.

Yep, my conclusion is that it is a coyote.  It's the only skull shape that pretty well matches the Google image searches for skulls of all the animals I can think of in that area.

Thanks for the help!  :)
