There is a method of IDing land, by description: "The NW parcel of the SW corner of the NW quarter of the xxx section..." This is in fact the legal way that ALL land is described, unless it has been laid out in streets. What is this called, and how do I put it to use?

For example, there's a land auction coming up and ALL the parcels are described this way! How do I find out where to start to look for a parcel I am interested in?

I did a Google search for "land descriptions" and this is the first link:

Sounds like your state uses the Federal Township and Range System.  Other hits from teh google search refer to the Public Land Survey System (PLSS) which appears to be the same thing.
