Sometimes all we need is validation- to feel like we aren't an infinitesimal speck of dirt in a hostile universe. And contrary to popular belief, strong men- the strongest of men- actually can break. We humans have a psychological limit and sometimes our circumstances and hardships exceed those limits. It's nothing to be ashamed of or feel inferior because of. Every single person on this planet who has ever enjoyed accomplishment, needed someone to help them at some vulnerable and painful point in their life. No exceptions. And when we talk about depression, what we are dealing with is neurochemistry here- receptors and agonists, endogenous chemicals that may be out of balance and causing you to suffer needlessly. Yes- there are things in life that can leave you broken and battered and it's times like those when we all need someone else. If you found yourself there in that dark place, then you've got to reach out and let your friends/family know what is going on.

You have worth- your life has worth- your pain has meaning- and there is always a way out, one that does not involve actions that transfer our pain to others. God Bless. I'm always here for anyone who needs to talk.

This is a very poignant thread and I’m glad it was bumped to the top.  I’ve been struggling with some serious demons, thankfully I have gained some perspective reading through this entire thread; I’ve realized I don’t have it that bad and need to “sack up.” Thank you whoever initially bumped this.  I needed a reality check.

When you think that life isn't worth living, when you wake up every Goddamn morning saying why do I have another morning, why do I have another day of soul crushing anxiety and depression, think about everyone that loves you.

Your dog.

Your wife.

Your kids.

Your parents.

I don't have the wife or kids, but am working on that now.

Find a reason to keep going.

Don't feel guilty.

But don't feel unloved.

I know the demons of depression and can tell you that there are those out there that would never forgive you if you killed yourself.

I'm not sure how many people on here saw the thread I made a couple months ago about how things were looking up for me for once, well they aren't again. And the other night I was drinking and feeling depressed and was going to get on youtube to listen to music. For some reason, the first recommended video for me was a scene from Good Will Hunting, the scene where Matt Damon was telling Robin Williams that he was the man in the boat in a storm and he could either drown or swim for a pier (something like that), then it showed Robin Williams drinking. And it stuck with me because of how much I could relate to it, and I realized something. I need to quit sitting here feeling sorry for myself and do what I've always done, fuck drowning, and fuck swimming, do like Lieutenant Dan.

And if somebody needs to talk, I'm down, but I'm kinda brutally honest so I don't know if I'm the best person to ask advice from.

I was glad to see this thread and wished I had seen it over a year ago. I have not been on this page in quite awhile. I started coming back about a month ago.
You see in the last 3 years I have lost several friends and close family members. Two years ago, a good friend of mine disappeared for two weeks. The mystery was solved when his exwife called to tell me he had killed himself in a Hotel in North Houston. He had been having problems for years with drinking. He still loved his exwife but she left him. a few months later, while tracking down another friend I had not heard from in awhile, I found out she died from a heart problem unexpectedly. In the Fall of 2016, the Aunt I was closest to (my dads sister) died and I went to her funeral in Kansas. while I was there, I hung out with the daughter of my closest cousin. My cousin came down to Texas twice last year to visit. Last July my family and his family rented a beach house on Bolivar for the week. My cousin is like an older brother to me. My dad raised him so the connection between he and I was pretty strong. Three weeks after that trip, I was on my way back to Kansas to attend his funeral. He died of sepsis.
Also in the Fall of 2016, another old friend, who had disappeared for some time, showed back up. He had been living on the streets of Houston for four years. He told me many stories about how bad life on the streets can be. June 2017 he called me, he was in Hotel and was very sick. The hotel room was a big smelly mess. He told me he had end stage Hep. C. I helped him and told him to call me if he needed anything. later that evening he called me and needed a ride to the Hospital. I took him and visited him several times during the following week. He called to tell me they were moving him to another place. It was the last I heard from him. Three days later I found out he had died the day before all alone. He had no family. I told him I would not let him die alone, but he did anyway.
When I returned from Kansas after my Cousin died, I was dealt the unkindest blow of all. My wife of 25 years told me she was leaving me for someone else. For a week I was really depressed and started drinking A LOT every night, wallowing in my misery. I had lost so many people and now losing my wife, it was all too much. Things became a blur for the next couple of weeks and then thing went from bad to stupid. After an argument with my wife, I found myself face down on the ground in my house with Police standing over me. I never touched my wife, but I was yelling really loud and scared my kids. My daughter called the police not knowing what else to do. I was completely at my emotional bottom. the police did not know what to do with me, so they took me to the hospital. I was in the ER for three days waiting and completely emotionally wrecked. After three days they took me to the psychiatric Hospital where I stayed for 6 days. They said I was suicidal, I told them I was just really really depressed and told them why. I was in a ward with Junkies, people with drug and alcohol problems and a few people who were clearly not in this realm of existence. I did not belong there.
when I got out, my wife was still animate that she was leaving me and filed for divorce. I was still coming apart. I started thinking about the end of all this but I heard a voice like a clear whisper from far away that told me to 'hold on and not lose faith'. I did not. I kept fighting for my marriage. By Thanksgiving, my wife and I were back together.
it has been over a year and a lot of work, but my wife is still with me and life is better. Next to our kids, she is the one person who matters to me the most. You might say that when I was at my lowest, God spoke to me, gave me hope and I listened. Before that I was not religious, Now I go to church every Sunday if I can.
So Yeah, I have had a hard road, for me, but I held on, even when I was ready to give up. I still miss and grieve all my friends an family.
I am glad I am still here, though it could have ended in a different way had I given up all hope.

One of my sister's roommates in college was depressed on and off for a long time and the happiest anyone had seen her in ages was when she was Maid of Honor at her older sister's wedding. Life of the party. Three days later she took her own life. Yes, the married couple had to cut the Honeymoon short to come back for the funeral. Yes, she had been planning her suicide for a while. Yes, my sister was the lucky one who discovered the body in the closed garage with two cars running.

She had plenty of people who loved her, she wasn't "bullied", she got good grades, any man would consider her a great "catch" as far as looks and personality (when she wasn't depressed).  Like you said its hard to make sense of it.

Sadly, there's so much more to depression than anyone can ever see or know unless they have lived it. You can have the best of everything and still be depressed or you can have a shit life and be depressed. It doesn't discriminate.

Thank you sir for bumping this thread and thanks to Ed Sr for starting this thread.  This is the first time I have seen it and I can relate to many of the downs and outs that other members have posted.

I received devastating news 2 weeks ago about my 11 yr old GSD. I had found a lump on her upper rib cage area and took her to the vet.  I was hoping and praying it was just a fatty tumor.  Unfortunately it turned out to be a mass cell cancer tumor and she had to have surgery to have it removed. When they did the surgery the tumor was much bigger and they had to cut some muscle tissue out as well.  Waited for a week to get the biopsy results back and the vet called and said it was worst case scenario.  She said my poor girl Mya has stage 4 cancer and they are giving her 4 months to live.  Talk about a kick in the gut.  Needles to say I was not prepared to hear this even though I knew deep down it was a possibility.  I have had dogs since I was knee high and have had my heart broken every time when they grow old and ill.

My dog Mya is a rescue that I adopted in 2008.  She is my only companion and I consider her to be the best friend I have ever had.  I pray every day for her and cherish every moment I have with her now.  For those that scoff at people who love their pets like kids I can only say walk a mile in my shoes and see if your perspective changes.  I am blessed to have 3 daughters so I know what it feels like to love and be loved.  I am glad I found this thread as it helped me to put into words the sadness I feel right now for my dog.  To all the other members posting here I pray that God pulls you each through the hardships you may be facing right now.

It's not uncommon for someone in that situation to seem better.  They have made their decision to end the pain.  With that decision can come some apparent happiness.

I have learned to talk with family members about mine, but it took a long time to be able to open up about feelings. I have been dealing with Dysthymia (Depression) for years, I see a MD about once a month for it.  I also have Type 1 diabetes and chronic long term Ulcerative colitis which compounds the the problems of depression.

The only reason I am listing my health problems is because I had long talk with a Doctor just a few weeks ago. About how illness  can bring on serious  depression in men who are having medical problems for the first time in there lives. He told me that a lot  of his middle age male

patients fall into this category.

For me the hardest part of depression is the loneliness you feel, it can be overwhelming. When you are depressed or sick, you tend to lose friends. I don't talk to any of the friends I had before I became sick (not by choice).  It can be very hard on your friends and family, especially if they do not understand depression or long-term illness.

I spend a lot time online, it helps. But I think depression can hit the young guys the hardest, and they can be the ones most at risk. And worse many young guys that I know turn too alcohol to help with depression. That is just throwing fuel on the fire, it's very sad to see a younger guy going through it.

If any of you guys are going through hard times, get help, talk too someone!!!  It does not mean your weak or any less of a man to ask for help.

Getting help to me means, your taking care of yourself, and  it also helps the people in your life. And that means your helping your friends and family, and that is something a man does.

Dzialosza: Thanks for posting this. I had depression too, it was so bad that I couldn't work, and everyone thought I was a lazy bum, including my wife, mom, and siblings. I was 50 when it hit.

I have a autoimmune diseases Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease it took the docs many years to figure it out because they were busy trying to get the symptoms under control, I had inflammation of the eyeball called episcleritis. The docs treated my episcleritis with Prednisone, but the problem is that I am allergic to this drug, which they didn't know at the time and which caused a whole raft of other problems, and I nearly died.

One of the effects of Hashimoto's thyroiditis and a side-effect of Prednisone is depression. It is just now that I am getting over the effects of the depression; but now to add to my woes the wife who was never really quite committed to our relationship is divorcing me because she is suffering from her own demons, ie NDP(?).

Google makes this soooooo easy.

https://www.healthyplace.com/other-info/mental-illness-overview/difference-between-mental-illness-and-mental-disorder

"...What Are Mental Disorders?
According to The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary, the following is the definition of "disorder" in medicine:

disorder dis·or·der (dis-ôr'd?r) n. - A disturbance or derangement that affects the function of mind or body, such as an eating disorder or the abuse of a drug.

dis·or·dered , dis·or·der·ing , dis·or·ders v. - To disturb the normal physical or mental health of; derange.

Because the definition of "disorder" includes, specifically, a disturbance of the mind (such as a mental disorder) it better fits what we now call mental illnesses, particularly before we understood that mental disorders are truly disorders of the brain (and not simply the "mind").

What Are Mental Illnesses?
According to The American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary, the following is the definition of "illness" in medicine:

disease dis·ease (di-zez') n. - A pathological condition of a body part, an organ, or a system resulting from various causes, such as infection, genetic defect, or environmental stress, and characterized by an identifiable group of signs or symptoms.

Because "disease" specifies that the pathological condition be of a body part, people were less likely to use the term "mental illness" before it was understood that mental illness are diseases of the body.

The difference between "mental disorder" and "mental illness," then is one of considering the origin of the condition... "

"...Dysthymic Disorder (depressed mood for most of the day on most days for more than two years)..."

BTW, Dysthymia, depression, and Seasonal Affective Disorder can be due to something as simple as vitamin D deficiencies.

I'm at risk of vitamin D deficiency because of Grave's disease and lack of direct sunlight 7 months out of the year. I can now tell when my vitamin D drops too low, after having experienced several up and down cycles.

So I spent entirely too much time at my grandparent's house watching her die from pancreatic cancer over about 3 years. As much as she suffered and as much as seeing it happened messed me up, the one thing that kept me from losing it when it happened was knowing that her suffering was finally over. At first I was pretty tore up, but the more I thought about it, she wasn't in pain anymore and she wasn't suffering anymore.

Honestly, I used to think that people that got that involved with an animal were stupid, but the more I think about it, the more I realize, I'm scared of getting that attached to a dog. It's a toss up whether I'll live longer than most of my friends and the people I care about, but I know I'll live longer than a dog.

I found this on my Facebook news feed:
I posted this last year when we were going through some really difficult times. Here I am a year later in the midst of a completely different difficult circumstance, and I needed my own words as a reminder. Thanks, God. ??

“God won’t allow anything to happen to you that you can’t handle.” FALSE! If that were the case, then why would we need God at all? In fact, it is exactly those things that we can’t handle that show us how utterly dependent we are upon Him. We were never meant to struggle through life’s difficulties by our own strength. If you feel like you’re in over your head, maybe you are! But have hope because your “Lifeguard” walks on water. Call out to God, like David did: “A hostile world! I call to GOD, I cry to God to help me. From his palace, he hears my call; my cry brings me right into his presence—a private audience!” (Psalm 18:6)

And Paul knew about this dynamic as well: “We don’t want you in the dark, friends, about how hard it was when all this came down on us in Asia province. It was so bad we didn’t think we were going to make it. We felt like we’d been sent to death row, that it was all over for us. As it turned out, it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally—not a bad idea since he’s the God who raises the dead! And he did it, rescued us from certain doom. And he’ll do it again, rescuing us as many times as we need rescuing. (2 Corinthians 1:8-10)

I don’t know why we think life ought to be easy. Suffering is a common thread woven through the lives of everyone who has ever lived. Disease, murder, rape, death, heartache – these are some of the things that have affected my family in one way or another. You have your own list. I can tell you from personal experience that God is faithful to sustain you and give you hope in your darkest days.

I knew and worked with him off and on since 2012.  I, and many others I work with were in a funk all last week.  I received the call Saturday afternoon and I was in tears.

The last text I sent him was the Tuesday before he ended his life.  He read it, and never responded.

RIP Phil.

I require alcohol, red meat, hot naked women, and large quantities of small arms and ammo. My other hobbies are soft, furry bunny rabbits, pretty butterflies, and balloons in pastel colors.

Do you really want your website catering to depressed suicidle members.

Yes, offer support, yes lock the threads asap.

Mental illness sucks.
WTF. Severe or otherwise depression is not a  mental illness.
Well, if you want to play semantic games, major depression can be a SYMPTOM of an underlying medical issue, typically involving imbalances in brain chemicals or neuroreceptors behaving in unusual ways.  Most people shorten it to considering it a mental illness.  They actually have medical tests that can reveal the different patterns of brain activity associated with different mental illnesses, but they involve expensive chemical combinations with exceedingly short usable lives, so only a few research centers have that capability, it's not used for routine diagnosis (look up SPECT brain imaging for details).   I'll note that I'm differentiating between major depression and situational depression - they may have the same outward symptoms, but different causes and treatment paths, although initially they may be the same.

If you're not dealing with major depression, it can be difficult to imagine.  Think about your brain actively trying to kill you, every minute of every day.  It's there telling you you suck, that nobody really loves you, that they'd be better off if you were gone, they're just pretending to be your friends, nothing will ever get better, you're worthless, there's no point trying to get help, etc...  Is it any surprise that it wears some people down to the point that they decide death is preferable to the constant pain?

There ARE treatments to make life better - my ex had her suicide planned out before she was properly diagnosed and placed on medication.  Seems the previous doctor when she was in college had a bias against using drugs and just told her to take lighter course loads if she couldn't handle the stress, when she actually saw a competent doctor, he helped find medication that helped stabilize her.  Unfortunately, we aren't at the point where they can just do a blood test and say "Oh, you're not properly processing seratonin, based on your numbers and genetic codes, 25mg a day of Paxil should be appropriate for you."  The best they can do, right now, is start you on a drug, question you about how you are feeling, if it works, great, if not, wean you off that drug and start you on another one.  And even if you get the right drug or combination today, your medication needs can be constantly changing, due to age, exercise levels, weight, sunlight exposure, diet, etc... which mean it's a constant balancing act.  My ex is my ex because she slid into the manic side without us noticing in time, after developing a tolerance to one of her medications, and decided I was holding her back from her goals in life and that divorcing me was the only way she could be happy.  I also suspect another medication she was taking was causing issues, because I was able to compare her prescription records with when our friends started noticing issues and found a correlation with a new drug, but by that point, she was refusing to listen to me.

The BEST long-term results tend to be a combination of drugs and therapy - drugs to deal with the immediate issue until therapy can help teach techniques to re-orient the brain, which is apparently what my ex is doing now, allowing her to hold a job and function in society, but I don't know the specifics of which therapeutic techniques she's using.  For some reason, I don't talk to my ex much...

Note: I'm not a doctor, but my ex was bipolar and has her degree in psychology and spent a lot of time reading whatever she could get on the latest research and discussing it with me, she probably could have gotten her Master's off of just her research, and possibly turned it into a PhD if she put some effort into it.  I also have a good friend who is a research professor in physiology and pharmacology specializing in the brain and has been involved in breakthroughs with recording, transferring, and playing back memories, and have had many discussions with him.

You can add me to the list of people who is willing to talk if someone needs it, I'm usually on here every evening for at least a little while, and my inbox has space for messages.

Anyone find out they’ve been lied to one turn after another most of their life and just get tired of it?  It just fucking sucks and gets old.

Not most of my life, but an entire relationship.

An excerpt - Me: "I do love you."
Her: "No, you don't. I've never told you the truth about who I am. I acted like the person I thought you'd want. You have no idea who I am."

Turned out she was right. I loved the person I thought she was, but had no idea who she really was. The person she really was, was deceitful, selfish and a cheater. So, I ended the relationship.

We were married, but no kids. That was the one good thing about it.

I'm about 10 years past that point. 9 past the divorce being final. It DOES get better.

I do have a son from a previous marriage. I didn't fight it when she moved out of state, but did get him every summer. I felt like a terrible parent, but made the most of the time I had with him. This was the first summer, I didn't get to see him and that's because the DOD sent him to Shanghai to learn Mandarin. He's in his Jr. Year on a 4 year NROTC scholarship (Marine option) and I couldn't be prouder. We've got a great relationship and his Mom and I get along now. Yes, there are parts of the divorce that will make parenting suck, but you can still be a good Dad and raise some awfully good kids.

You just try the best you can with what you have. Hopefully, your son will choose wisely, then again it is kind of like a toss of the dice. I miss my son too.
