OK.  Now that you are here, imagine that I have a very disorganized vault.  Imagine that I recently installed the shelving, and am currently trying to get situated. Next, I would most likely want to add some type of padding to the entire work bench surface to protect anything that may come into contact with the plywood. I would probably want it to be slip and tear resistant.  A big long roll of mousepad would be the ideal material, although I have contemplated coating the entire surface with a few thick coats of that Plasti-dip rubber paint.

Any ideas or sources for what would be the best solution for a dilemma such as this?

Thanks.

Sorry, I have no intelligent suggestions...just wanted to say that looks like a very cool start on a neat project.

You can find some great deals at some of those small materials stores (the kind women shop in).

You should be able to gather rolls of thin padding - and some material to go over it (some snag protection).

Its worth a shot.

Get a bunch of G.I. iso mats and you're all set. Lay 'em out flat and staple them down. Pretty damn close to "A big long roll of mousepad" as you describe.

Mabey some closed cell foam carpet padding. It comes in nice wide rolls to keep seems
to a min.

I imagine those beams would be to support all the steel and concrete they would be supporting.

Those appear to be horseshoes, welded together, and then screw attached to the plywood that is attached to furring strips that are attached to concrete.

Keep the suggestions coming guys.  A couple of good ideas I had not thought of so far.  Thanks

Well, some of us should not free brain eating zombies....Now regular zombies, run and hide. But if all they want is a brain, some of us will be safe....

I would just cover them with carpet.  Something like indoor-outdoor carpet.

Nice setup, by the way.

I ain't no decorator.

But it would sure make me happy if that setup were mine.

And the vice would be the crowning glory.

I would dip the horseshoe gun holders in the plastic paint you mentioned to protect the guns.
Paint or carpet on the back boards would be fine.

Looks nice by the way.

If you plan on doing any type of filing or grinding around there I would avoid a surface that's soft enough to hold metal shavings. Some of the anti-static mats we have at work are rubbery and if you drop metal shavings on them they're on there forever.  They're great to work on though, you just have to have a separate filing / grinding area.

ETA: What, no camauflage netting?

how bout that stuff you get at sears for lining tool boxes and such?

it's non-stick(kinda rubbery) and cushiony.

::edit::

meant to say non-slip

How about 1/4" rubber sheeting?  You could also add a cut resistant mat and one or two of these.  Or you could cover the plywood with melamine sheet and cover half/part with rubber.

What about that Rhino Lineing stuff for pick-up truck beds? If you could get in white or tan it would help to keep track of small springs and detent pins.

I like the way you think.  A few minutes ago, I ran across this place. 1/4" bulk mouse pad  Sent them a quote request for a roll 28 lf x 18 inches wide.  This is my favorite option so far.  I haven't found a decent source for the bare rubber yet.

A few of those Tipton mats wouldn't be bad at all.   Had not seen those.

Thanks

Being as plywood is rather soft, why worry? If you cover the surface you have to worry about solvents, oils, snags, and the like. Just use a roll out mat if you are worried, otherwise I'd just seal it with some Thompsons or similar product. I'd like to have a stainless top myself.

Does that stuff have any "cushy" properties to it?  Another good point about the lighter color.

Thanks

Home Depot has squares of indoor-outdoor carpet that are 18" square with a heavy rubber backing.

same stuff that's used in the produce section in some supermarkets, it's great for gun mats, etc.

No NO NO....  What you need to do it go onto the ARFCOM store and just buy all of GB's new mouse pads that you can.  That way you have the padding you want and to top it off it will make a nice pattern.
