After a short search, one of the Imperial Officers states if the Falcon had jumped into hyperspace, it could be halfway across the galaxy by then. Of course we haven't, but it's the idea it conveys that is important. The falcon could have been basically anywhere at that point, which is what I think he was really trying to convey. |

The trilithium torpedos in "Generations" could destabilize a star by stopping all fusion in it, effectively causing a nova. The Tox Uthat was essentially the same idea, a quantum phase inhibitor that could stop all fusion in a star. Then there's red matter, a small portion of which, can form a black hole. As I say, the one thing I can think of that blows Trek out of the water is Starkiller base. A weapon capable of engaging multiple planets in a starsystem at once from a few systems over...that's next-level power. |

I actually try to ignore the complete outliers that both series have. Q, Vader force choking people from across the system, Death Star, the Traveler all are things that just throw the typical on its ear. Personally I tend to look at the types the series focuses on. The federation isn't a war armada; it's a fleet of science and exploration vessels like Magellan might have traveled in. They have weapons (like the cannons on the old ship) for defense if they fall under attack. The empire is outfitted for war and oppression. Star Trek does fill out pretty nicely when you advance 100-150 years, especially with the borg and 8472 floating around, federation warships, the kdf alliance, etc. Still, Trek is heavily outnumbered, no question. |

Quoted: The Romulan Warbird was a gigantic waste of space. HUUUGE target and yet very little actual pressurized space within. All because of that giant void in the middle, yet if you shot in the middle, you'd hit their shields regardless. Quoted: Cloaking device. View Quote Quoted: The Klingons were based on Niven's Kzinti, which were 8 foot tall tigers with hairless rat tails. View Quote Quoted: What is ridiculous about all the Star Trek ships (Romulan, Klingon, Federation et al) is in fact the location of the command bridge on a prominent location basically one bulkhead away from outer space. The sci-fi designers seem hell bent on the idea that the crew needs to see through windows to see where they are going, or that is the lasting impression. The bridge of every Enterprise for example (Constitution, Ambassador, Galaxy, Excelsior, Sovereign class), has the command bridge located in a bulge on the dorsal surface of the saucer section. A very dumb engineering and tactical faux pax. The reality is the commander sees and maintains situational awareness through a viewscreen monitor so why not bury the bridge in the very center of the starship? View Quote Nowadays we wouldn't find that peculiar. Same as the modern day 2D or even 3D "holographic" interfaces you commonly see in SciFi TV and movies today, that would've been just a bridge too far back then, even if they could fake it with optic FXs. You can't push the belief factor too far on certain things. It's not always logical though what you can push far and what you can't, it's just a people thing I guess. |
