Saw the infomercial for Insanity workout and it looks pretty good until I saw the 3 easy payments of $40 each and then was like

I'm sure some folks here have bought/done it, is it really worth that kind of cash?

Buy it on e-bay.  I think I bought it for $60 or so.

Be careful with the ebay versions. Check out the teambeachbody.com message boards, most all of those are bootleg copies, and the Insane Abs workout and Sports Training jump back and forth all over the place.

Unless you buy it from BeachBody, or a BeachBody coach, you have no recourse.

I completed it around April 24, and continued doing the second month advanced stuff 6 days a week since then. It's worked for me big time.

I have one of beachbody's other offerings.... P90X.

I am of the personal belief that all of their programs will work.  There is a good bit of nutritional info, and some great motivational workouts.

I've completed two complete cycles of P90X, so I can just imagine what Insanity is like.

All of this stuff can be done WITHOUT buying the program. Just remember that.

It's simply a higher-intensity version of a lot of common military excercises/cross-fit/etc... The internet can be used to find good information for free.

Just FYI. The only money I spend on fitness is a gym membership, simply b/c I don't have room for my own weights/bench. And new running shoes when mileage dictates.

Just admit it.  Even if it was worth it, it would gather dust next to your DVD player.

That is true, but what I get out of the program is the constant pushing pace, the motivational yells, the constant reminders and tips on proper form, 30 second/10 second/5 second warnings that help you stay in there, etc.

Maybe others can push themselves as hard as they can for 40 minutes to an hour without a structured program like that, but I don't think I could. Too easy to go at your own pace, stretch out the breaks, etc. That's the big part for me.

This. Buy the official shizzle from the official nizzles. If you actually follow the program, you'll drop body fat and build strength (notice I did not say 'mass') like a motherfucker.

If you can't rock out 50 milgrade pushups in 60 seconds, then you don't need to worry about mass anyways. Get P90X or another Beach Body system, follow it, complete it, and then (and only then) worry about looking like Conan.

I understand that reason. You can also try to find a workout partner to push eachother, but I know that's hard to find. I'm able to motiviate myself to kick my own ass, but that's thanks to my time in the Marines to learn how.

I did Insanity without a workout partner, but it even helps to have a partner with it, if you have the room. Then you can keep an eye on each others' form.

If you do it, I'd recommend a heart rate monitor so you can track your heart rate... I usually kept mine between 145 and 160. It will help you stay safe, and also let you know if you've been slacking a bit and that you need to pick it up.

So how much of these types of work outs like Insanity and P90X are a change in the nutrional diet?  I'm lazy, need to do more, but not necessarily looking to change my entire diet.  I like stuffing my face with whatever I feel like, and I'm by no means overly obese (5'11" - 200lbs), just want to feel better and tighten up a bit.

My wife would probably do it with me as well...obviously we wouldn't get AS much from doing p90 or insanity without doing the nutritional piece, and I understand that, but is it worth buying and doing anyway even if you dont do that piece?

The Insanity program is awesome!   It will kick your ass.  Take rest when you need to; when you start the program, it will be hard to keep up but it is well worth it.  I got mine on eBay for about 60 bucks.

Unless you're built like a mini-nuke...you're fat. Sorry, dude. "Diet" is always the determining factor of success/failure when it comes to "getting fit". That doesn't mean you have to live off of sprouts and pistachios...but you do have to cut back on the Mickie Dees and other bullshit...with any worthwhile program.

Want to look good? Stop eating shit and start doing shit. P90X is a great way to break into a healthy lifestyle. Where you decide to go from there (after completing an honest rotation of the program) is entirely up to you.

Honestly, I think most people would be better off eating better & less, joining a gym, running 30 mins a day, and doing push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups before moving on to anything more committed/complicated.

I don't know about the nutritional part. I didn't follow their guide, but I did look through it occasionally to get ideas. I use Michi's Ladder as a guide as to what I should be eating.

I started eating healthier for a bit before I even started. I'm done with fast food, sugar, etc. I feel much better and my dinners are good restaurant quality rather than throwing a Red Baron pizza in the oven.

My typical meals in a day:

Breakfast: 2 eggs, oatmeal (2 packets of Splenda and some cinnamon). Recently added a whole grapefruit as well.
Midmorning: Premier Nutrition protein bar OR protein shake blended with frozen strawberries or blueberries OR some low calorie flavored yogurt and an apple or something.
Lunch: Turkey, red pepper hummus, fat free cheddar cheese, lettuce, onion and salsa on a multigrain flatwrap. Or a turkey and cheddar panini made with a multigrain thin bun on the Foreman grill.
Midday: Something from the midmorning menu
Dinner: Grilled chicken, salmon, tilapia, etc. on the Foreman, occasionally steak, brown rice prepared in the steamer (I make several days worth at once so it's ready), frozen vegetables done in the steamer.

I take a multivitamin, a B complex vitamin, glucosamine for my joints, and creatine for supplements.

Of course you'll get results without following good nutritional guidelines... it doesn't even have to be THEIR nutritional guidelines... but when you're working this hard and killing yourself with workouts trying to get results, it seems a shame to not follow healthy eating habits and potentially sabotaging yourself IMO.

$60 for a rip-off copy. $120 for a guaranteed good copy that will also help those who develop these programs to be able to make more of them.

As I said above, I don't look at it as a "how to exercise"... a good program like this with videos is the closest thing you can have to a personal trainer yelling at you in your living room without hiring one.

You will never, ever see any success.  Exercise will get you over the hump or to the next level, but 85% or more of the game is diet.  There aren't enough hours in the day to outwork a bad diet.  If you really want to do something, you need to clean up your act diet wise.

And there are certain websites out there where, if you're inclined, you can download movies for no cost.  I may or may not have ever done this.  Insanity is out there if you care to look for it.

The truth is that many Don't Know What They Don't Know when it comes to fitness. Even a semi-savvy guy like myself has found the P90X program to be well worth the money. If nothing else, fantasizing about the different ways you'd like to sodomize, dismember, and/or eliminate Mr. "That's Money" is plenty of drive to carry you through the P90X workouts.
Programs such as P90X give the novice (or the experienced lifter just out of surgery/physical therapy, such as myself) a coach, a partner, a set routine, and a motivator all in one.
What price do you put on your health, looks and/or well-being? To me, the P90X program was worth it's weight in gold. After my accident and subsequent surgeries, I was no longer able to lift like I used to. Having been a "grunter/OOOOOUUUUUGGGHHHTTTT guy" for so long, I was literally a babe in the woods when I was told that I could no longer do those things anymore. P90X got me off of my duff, pushed me in the right direction, and I've carried on from there.
Long story short, if one has allowed oneself to get to the "pudgy state", then it's pretty clear that self-discipline has likely become/always been a foreign concept and, unless said person can afford a gym membership and frequent coaching from a personal trainer, programs such as P90X are the only avenue available to them.
I don't endorse much, as I pretty much hate everything (being well aware that such a mindset is a flaw and not a trait to be lauded), but I do stand behind the Beachbody P90X program. If you follow it...you will get cut. If you're out of shape, it may suck at first...but it only gets easier as time goes by.
My two cents...

If you buy the official BeachBody.Com P90X workout, splurge for the extra Disc Protection/Replacement insurance. I burned out my copy of the Abs DVD before long. The cardboard sleeves they send with the discs do more harm than good, IMHO.

If it saves the cost of a personal trainer then it would be a good deal. I remember a TLC show about this 500lb guy getting in shape. He started by doing aerobics in front of the TV to old Richard Simmons videos.

To me it is about balance.  So many people think they will go from flab to fit simply by diet.  While a reasonable diet will reduce the flab, and for most make them look better in clothes, working out is the only way to look good naked.  In the end, looking good naked is what most people want.

Do you know if this personal trainer substitute gets the point across how GOOD it feels to be in shape? It isn't just a cosmetic thing!

After you see what you can do with eating healthy and figure out how to make quick meals, you'll wonder why you eat garbage in the first place.

I can cook one of my dinners I posted above in about the same time you can make a frozen pizza. And the stuff I eat every night looks like a plate I'd be proud to make for a girl I was trying to impress.

You know how much chicken breast or salmon fillets you can eat, calories wise, compared to an 1100 calorie Long John's Two Piece Fish & More? Yeah, LJS tastes good, but not that good.

I've done the P90x workouts a couple times, and they are good workouts.
I just think the average person isn't going to actually do the DVD workout, in their home, when they could change the channel, sit on the sofa, and eat some 'tato chips.
Best to get out of your house and go to "work" essentially.
YMMV obviously
