What is the best method for securing the gas block when you are trying to tap in a roll pin for the gas tube?

I dremeled out a contour in a hockey puck, worked fine everytime.

Where you located in PA? Pm me if you're not comfortable posting it here.. doesn't take much but it is helpful if you have a gas block - block and a roll pin punch, all in which I have. Just installed one today and one last week

I don't think you need tapered pins for a 5/64" gas tube roll pin.

Use a 1/16" punch and make sure the gas tube hole is centered.

Use a 5/64" starter punch to get it well, started.

Use a 5/64" roll pin punch to seat it flush.

If you are talking about using a jig or holding fixture to hold the gas block, I've never seen the need.

I use the Midwest Ind. URR and turn it 90 degrees in the vice.  Put the upper on it so the hole is vertical.  Seat the pin.

Just grind a little off the edge of the pin and drive it home using a punch and hammer and a piece of wood as a back stop. Put a drop of Birchwood Casey cold bluing on it if you feel like it.

Block of hardwood.

Blob of freshly mixed Bondo.

Small sheet of saran wrap over the bondo.

Smootch gas block and barrel into saran-wrapped bondo.

Come back in an hour.

Tap in roll pin.

Toss block in toolbox.

I built most of my rifles on my office desk. I use my business cards and stack them under the top then thwack it with my roll pin punch and gunsmithing hammer.  Works every time.

Me too.

It is harder to pick the tiny gas tube pin up then actually drive it in

Put it on a table or something

It’s not like it’s difficult. Probably the easiest of the roll pins to install.

Unless you’re talking about FSB taper pins… now that can be a motherfucker

This works well enough.

You can also be lazy and just crank the block between some aluminum block jaws/barrel blocks and bronze-brush the aluminum smears off the gas block when you're done.

Last one I put in with vice grips. Wrapped the gas block in a thin towel and squeezed it in a little at a time.

Several manufacturers offer purpose-made blocks for this. Ours is due to launch soon. While it’s designed for our Gas Controls, it works great for standard fixed blocks as well. One side does .625” and .750 sizes while the other does.875” models.

Wether it’s homemade or professionally made, a legit assembly block is a must have. Padded vice jaws are okay for a makeshift setup for small quantities.

File the edges down ever so lightly and put a drop of oil on it. Put a small piece of wood behind it and then tap it home with a brass punch and hammer. I have done dozens this way and never had an issue.

What the fuck is wrong for you people???!

-search around garage for some surface that you can use. Tires work good.

-awkwardly hold it to the side, and try and balance the fucking pin in the hole while you try and hammer it in with a roll pin punch.

-knock it to the floor 3-4 times.

-get progressively more pissed.

-finally wack it and send it into the neither realm.

-look for it for about an hour.

-give up. Order 4-6 replacements from brownells.

-wait 3-7 days.

- get new roll pins. Attempt it again the same way. On the way to the set of tires, find the god damn fucking pin right on the ground in front of you.

-try the same thing again and again until you get it.
