If you shut the switch off on the wall, then there is no power going to it. Shut the breaker to be safe, but I usually just shut off the switch if I am not able to get to the box. I am not an electrician by any means, but I have never been zapped either. Or what ss2nv said.

Glad you're still around to post your results. FWIW, though ... quite often there are other conductors in a ceiling box that could remain "hot" if they are on a different circuit (or breaker) than what you turned off. Just be sure you are not involved in any way with a different circuit or are opening up a "shared" neutral wire. Plz forgive if you're now muttering "like, duh". Stay safe |
