Should I bother to go with R30 insulation above steel siding in my barn or just go with R19?

A few things to consider:

Pole barn.

Steel siding will be fastened on the bottom side of the trusses.

2" thick insulated steel liner panels on the walls.

40' x 50' x 10' tall.

Concrete floor.

Will only be heated in the winter by a propane furnace when I'm working on something or hanging out.

Heating with propane will create a lot of extra moisture.

Insulation on the underside of a roof requires thought; there  needs to be air space between the roof and the insulation to allow moisture to migrate.

It needs to be properly planned.

Then furnace I was going to install is a direct vent 80% that would hang from the ceiling.  I believe it was around 100,000 BTU.

Still a problem?

Oh, If I re-read your post correctly, the steel and insulation will be approximately 8' below the actual Shingled roof.

you have to insulate steel...

If not, your building will rain on the inside when conditions are right

that said anything r11 or better will work just fine.
