Help me out here with some opinions,my gun collection is not huge by any means(bout 10 long , 10 handgun) but I do have some nice pieces and some decent money spent (you know how fast a couple AR rifles can get expensive).....if something were to happen to them I would probably not be able to replace them all without years of more hard work. I keep them secure in a nice vault, but I am wondering if I should insure them......problem is I really do not want the insurance man (or anyone else) having a list with serial numbers and the required photo proof of everything I have, insurance agent says homeowners will only pay 1,000 if something happens and that really would not begin to replace everything. Do not mean to be paranoid but you know how it is.

Look into the NRA insurance program.  The best I remember, they don't ask for actual serial numbers, they ask for the total number and value of guns and gun accessories.  They do ask for a description for guns that are worth over a certain amount.

I don't know if you asked your insurance agent this, but some homeowners insurance plans have riders that increase the amount of firearms coverage that you have. I have a friend you took his limit from $1000 to $2500.  This probably still is not enough to cover your collection, but it would still limit your losses if you didn't get anything else.

I can understand not wanting the serial numbers out there, but why would you not want photo proof of them (assuming that the serial number is not visible)?  I"m just curious because in the past I have posted pictures of my guns without the serial number thinking that there was not any problem with it and am wondering if I overlooked a potential risk.

The photo reluctance is just part of my caution (or paranoia) ,probably no logical reason for not wanting to give my insurance guy pics,he is probably an honest man,but I am just unsure of who all could see his records with my address and such. I am probably being ridiculous, but this is how i can be occasionally.

I had a rider put on my homeowners policy to insure my firearms. Yes I had to provide Serial #'s, pics and an appraisal but the peace of mind was well worth it to me. I dont feel the need to wear tinfoil.

I only pay 1% of appraised value(per year) to cover all of them from theft, loss etc.

I looked into a rider for my Homeowners, but they wanted a LOT of cash, more than I was willing to pay.

I only wear my tinfoil hat when I am on the computer, driving,or having sex.....it just makes good sense.

there are 2 good firearms insurance groups , historic and classic (I think) . I'm seriously thinking about getting into one or the other. they cover lots of stuff that most companies do not. then again I'm getting into the NFA side of firearms , and I thought BRD was bad .

hopefully someone who has experiance with them will chime in. I've also heard that if you put your guns on a rider with your home owners ins. and they do get stollen that most companies will drop you . YMMV

Why not buy a safe

Always a priority of course, but even safes can be defeated. Or you can have your guns stored in a non-fireproof safe and lose them to fire, etc.

A freind had a safe along with $30,000 worth inside, came home one day, entire safe gone.  Standard homeowners paid our $2500.  THAT is why insurance is a good idea.

Your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy should cover firearms as unscheduled personal property, i.e. you need to have good personal records of what you have but you shouldn't have to communicate specifics to your insurer.

If you can't verify this in your policy's language, just ask your agent in writing for an interpretation.

In my case, firearms are included among all my other personal property.  My insurer advised me to get a rider specifically covering firearms if the value of my collection exceeds a certain amount.

here is supposed to be a good one  http://www.historicfirearms.com/  . they cover a lot  that even a good house rider wont cover. like having your guns stollen while at the range or from your car. I'm not sure if its this one or another one  but some companies even cover kabooms. a very handy thing for people with  RR MG's .
