The flight seat cushions were taken out whenever the Orbiter was in the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF). Maintenance folks used ground cushions whenever they needed to sit in the seats.

I've been in the cockpit many times in the 21 years I worked at KSC- I'm glad I had the opportunity to do so.

I saw a public mockup of an orginal Shuttle ground trainer and thought "This thing looks
like a L-1011."
