A large amount of rounds for Russian T-62 tanks were captured by the Ukrainian army in Khreshchenivka, #Kherson Oblast.
We finally can take a look what ammo these relics were provided with.
View Quote

The first one we see is a Soviet 3UBM5 115 mm round with a 3BM6 armour-piercing, fin-stabilised, discarding-sabot tracer projectile (made in 1978).
Such projectile with an initial speed of 1680 m/s can penetrate ~250mm of armor- for modern warfare it has very modest performance.
View Quote

Another round seen is a Soviet 3UOF37 with a 3OF27 HE-FRAG projectile (made in 1974).

HE-FRAG projectiles are seeing much more use in this war and given the 3kg explosives payload of the 3OF27, comparable to more modern Soviet projectiles of this type, definitely can be useful.

British Revenge class battleship HMS Royal Sovereign now renamed Arkhangelsk during a lease transfer to the Soviet Union at Scapa Flow naval base in May 1944, escorted arctic convoys until the end of the war and later returned in 1949 and scrapped the same year due to poor condition.
View Quote

Arkhangelsk ran aground in the White Sea in late 1947; the extent of damage, if any, is unknown.[61] The Soviet Navy returned the ship to the Royal Navy on 4 February 1949 after the former Italian battleship Giulio Cesare was transferred to the Soviet Black Sea Fleet.[59] The Soviet Navy had initially sought to avoid sending the ship back, claiming that she was not sufficiently seaworthy to make the voyage back to Britain. After an inspection by a Royal Navy officer, however, the Soviet Navy agreed to return the vessel in January 1949. Upon returning to the Rosyth naval base, Royal Navy personnel thoroughly inspected the ship and found much of her equipment to be unserviceable. It appeared to the inspectors that the main battery turrets had not been rotated while the ship was in Soviet service, and were jammed on the centreline. As a result of her poor condition, she was sold for scrap.[62] The ship arrived at Thos. W. Ward's scrapyard at Inverkeithing, Scotland, on 18 May to be broken up.[61] The elevation mechanisms from her main battery gun turrets were later reused in the 250-foot (76 m) Mark I radio telescope at Jodrell Bank, Cheshire built in 1955–1957.[63]

Some sources claim that large parts of the ship were covered in feces.

The only thing I would mention about breaking holes into the floor in Ukraine is, they may not have had water pressure after the first flush, and some of the footage (like from that school where they stored ammo recently) seems to indicate that they were breaking holes in the floor in order to sleep there (which makes sense for "some" frag/direct fire protection).

But yeah, considering the rest of the shit we have seen about how they live in the field, I wouldn't be surprised if they were sleeping AND shitting in holes in the floor.

That design of engine existed long before the Russians did it.  Submarines and aircraft used it as early as the 1930s probably goes back further than that.

It’s not double, it isn’t spinning camshafts or lifting valves, or using chemical energy to heat the head, it doesn’t need a head gasket, etc. Coming soon for cars, and sooner for the Abrams, via Cummins/Achates.

It's always been sad to me that the Russians, who have generated some incredible engineering talent, have wasted away all of it on the pursuit of a corrupt political system and ideology for generations.

We all would have been much better off if communism had never happened. Imagine Russia, Ukraine and others as part of the greater European diaspora for the better part of the 20th century, untainted by idiotic communism infecting the world.

Imagine all the lives not lost under communism. Imagine Nazism never even existing, as it was largely a response to communist infiltration into German society, and wasn't even initially about the evil Joos.

Imagine the Korean War or Vietnam never happening. Imagine China not as a totalitarian communist regime.

What if all the great minds of the world had been working together towards the pursuit of the advancement of humanity  rather than the pursuit of a boot on one's neck.

Communism has hampered human development and cooperation for over a century.

Fairbanks-Morse designed an opposing piston engine in the 20s or 30s.
they used them in railroad engines and towboat engiens until about 1994.
very fuel ineffiecient, dirty, and smokey.

I think the DoD spent big bucks refining and developing a high compression opposed piston engine for tanks and such.

Seems like I read a paper about it at some point in the last couple years.

ETA:  Yep.  Achates power and Cummins working on the ACE advanced combat engine.  14 liter 1k hp opposed piston engine. $87 million contract.

Here's an old Periscope film about opposed piston diesels for submarines. It goes into various designs and the power vs size vs efficiency tradeoffs. Tanks and AFVs aren't even the largest potential market - tractor trailers are. Very interesting!
