It's not very often I've seen an article look at gun control like this, and I think it does a good job.

"I'm a liberal blah blah blah, we're not gonna take you're guns, blah blah blah..." ETA: "For many gun control advocates, the idea that we’re supposed to arm ourselves against criminals to the point that everyone is walking around with a gun seems, well, barbaric. And I sympathize. I’d too would rather live in a society where such things aren’t necessary; I’m just not sure how to get there because, well, gun policy is hard. In the meantime, I, personally, don’t want to disarm people for whom a gun could be a life-saving device. Your mileage may vary" He "sympathized" with the gun control advocates because he would rather live in a society where that wasn't necessary. But that society is not present, therefore it seems feelings are more important. Then states "gun policy is hard", leaving me to reason that the way to that utopian society is through gun legislation/policy. Better? This was just above the conclusion, BTW. |

did any of you actually read the whole thing? I figured no one would. Pearls before swine. We have some pretty stupid TL;DR folks here. This is probably the best and fairest treatment of the gun control debate I've ever read. And by someone who works for a libertarian think tank who is pro gun. But the usual GD crowd won't realize this or won't care. |

The author focuses a lot on "weakly/under-motivated" criminals. While some of them may possess guns, I have no reason to think they use them to shoot people. If I become convinced they might, I'll keep my guns and my motivation, thank you.
On the other hand, he states, "Mass shooters are highly motivated criminals who will substitute other guns, handguns, hunting rifles, shotguns, etc., to commit their crimes." Again, I'll keep my guns and my motivation, thank you. |

It may help lower other crimes but the highly motivated criminals are still going to be there. |

He did not mention plea bargaining. The vast majority of gun crimes are plea bargained down. It was some time ago, but a study showed that 98% of gun charges were plea bargained down in Broward county FL. 93% in Dade county were Janet Reno was the DA at the time.
What good are laws that are not used 98% of the time? Janet Reno was famously anti-gun. A little OT, but I heard that during the recent truck attack in Nice that some people jumped on the truck and tried to stop it. Too bad one of them wasnt CCW. Could possibly have saved some lives. France is one entire Gun Free Zone. |
