Hey gang, I just wanted to pop my head up and say hello. I've been lurking here for a long time and finally took the registration plunge. Looking forward to lots of interesting chats with everyone. So, here's my question: What's a good, inexpensive bolt-action rifle? I mean those older, ww2-era rifles I keep seeing everywhere but know absolutely nothing about. Appreciate any info ... |

Hiya! Two issues here: the rifles and the ammo. You want both to be affordable and plentiful, with the ammo preferably available as non-corrosive and reloadable. Also important is the type of rear sight on the rifle. Can your eyes use the typical tangent rear sights, or must you use the rear-mounted aperture sights which are less common, but easier to use an a tad more accurate? Narrow it down a bit for us, please. |

A-O: Good to see you. How 'bout looking for a nice old Swedish Mauser? Well made and fun to shoot. There's a lot to choose from and a lot of information to look up about them. Mosin-Nagants are another fun choice. There are many accessories for these, too. Have fun. Get a gun. |
| A-O, welcome!! As far as the rifle, how about a Yugoslavian M-48? They are new after being stored for 50 years. Ammo is way cheap, readily available, and fun to shoot. Dealer cost in Shotgun News is $179.99. There are cheaper used ones available too--as much as $100.00 cheaper. Again, welcome. |
| A.O. -- For the money, the Ishapore 2A NO.1 MKIII gets my vote.-- I know it's post WW2, BUT!! You can usually find an EX+ (most have like new BBLS) for around $125.00 and .308 ammo is cheap. -- accurate, mild recoil and a Fun 300 yd. rifle.-- Good Shooting -- ALLONS11 |

#4MkI SMLE, or one of those Yugo mausers. The Nagant is reliable, but it's ergonomics will frustrate your developing a good speed throw of the bolt. The Mauser is slightly better for accuracy than the SMLE, but not by much. The No4 SMLE IS the best combat bolt action. Ten rounds, detachable mags inexpensive ammo, great combat sights, and robust easy to maintain design. -Meplat |
