I've used a lot of Smart TVs and I keep coming back to Roku, it seems like the best to me; simple/clean interface that's easy to use. Google is probably up next for me and then Apple TV. I can't stand FireTVs, Samsung and LGs, I think they're terrible, especially the LGs with the mouse remote thing. Are there any other ones worth taking a look at? Thanks |

Android TV is open. You can easily replace the home screen and remap (most of) the dedicated app buttons on the remote. I install one called FLauncher on my android TV things. Its simple and clean. None of the ads and suggestions. During June, google's suggestions are overrun with putting rainbows and trannies front and center on your home screen. FLauncher lets you stop that nonsense. You can customize it as much as you want for background, icon size, categories, etc. And for remapping the buttons, there's a dozen different button remapper apps in the play store. Google gave special treatment to the one that brings up their stupid assistant. So that one cannot be remapped without rooting your device. All the other ones you can remap. So if you dont ever use netflix, you can make the netflix button on the remote open any other app or screen. And FLauncher is even open. We have 5 or 6 of the Roku HDMI sticks. I like them well enough... We have one Firestick, does not get used, not even on a TV anymore. |

I want something that is "grandma proof" so once it's set up, all she has to do is power on, and select what she wants. An ad free version sounds amazing, but not sure i can handle getting that set up for her, and also not sure how resilient it is. Getting it set up, maybe... i'm not totally incompetent, but i can't trouble shoot remotely with her, so need something that once it's set up, it's rock solid. Thank you for any insight... it doesn't have to be the best TV, it's going to be in a bright room without a lot of off angle viewing, so most midrange TVs should be fine i think. Blue tooth headphone ready would be a big bonus. |

Blue tooth headphone ready would be a big bonus. Sadly, I don't think there's gonna be anything thats bulletproof to the point you can expect to never have to do remote support for granny. Back in the day, TVs had channels. Granny just needed to know the power button turned it on and channel 39 was was matlock and murder she wrote. These days, granny needs to know how to open the right app, then navigate that app to find her show. The interface for navigating around to get to your app can change. The interface inside the app to find your shows can change. Even the available shows on at app will change as they add and remove stuff from the netflix and hulu libraries. I think for grandma-proof, I would still suggest installing flauncher. Reason being, you control the interface of the home screen. You get to decide what apps show up where. And that allows you to remove the recommendations that may show up at the top of the screen. If you buy a google/android/LG/etc TV and leave the stock interface on it, the stuff that shows up on the home screen is constantly changing. They have teams of jackasses who try to keep it fresh and new. They are always striking back-room deals where some app like hulu will pay them to push users to watch a show, and that pushes users to sign up for a hulu subscription. Grandma doesnt need that. Grandma needs to turn on the TV and it acts the same in 5 years as it did the day you set it up. Flauncher lets you do that. You put her 3 apps at the very top of the screen, and you can hide all the others. Then set flauncher as the default home screen. I would say try this out for yourself on your own TV first before you spend any money. |

Both my nice Sony TVs came with Google/Android TV. After an update or two, the TVs run slow as shit. Bought Apple TVs for every TV. Very pleased and won’t be going back to anything else. It’s fast and always works. Being able to pick up the Apple Remote or the Sony TV remote and have it be able to control the Apple TV is a game-changer. Roku is very good for a USB stick smart TV, but it’s still not as good as Apple’s product. |
