Ok, so I go to this bar/pizza place twice or three times a month with my friend. The bartender is good pals with my friend and so, by extension he and I shoot the shit and get to be good acquaintances... So every time we go to settle up, its always "Oh, don't worry about it man" or "You're good. See you later." And this isn't exactly chump stuff. We usually have three beers each and split a pizza. So, I kind of feel a little like I'm stealing. I put at least $10 in the tip jar each time, but still. Thats not going to the owner. On the other hand, I don't really feel like I can politely refuse and still go back there. And its pretty much the only bar I'll go to. Should I just quit going or should I just stfu and enjoy the free beer? |
Tell others about the place and make his money work for him. Places like that come and go, the ones with positive word of mouth are the ones that last. That way he's not so much giving you free pizza and beer, but more or less paying for advertisement. Conscience problem solved. |

I have been going to the same bar/pizza place for the last 8 years or so. Im good friends with now owners, they use to be the bartenders. I always run a tab for the night. At the end of the night, its always,"Ed what do I owe ya"? Always off the top of his head, he pulls out a number that is no where close to what I drank/ate for the night. I pay and leave a good tip. Like everyone else said, they are just taking care of the good customers. I wouldnt worry about it, leave a good tip and be on with your night. |
Ok, ya'll make sense. There probably is some business component to it. B&J's on SPID down just before you get to the JFK causeway in Corpus Christi. In Habeeb Square. Great atmosphere, an ENORMOUS selection of beer, great people, awesome pizza. Keep a list of all the new beers you try there and they give you free shit like mugs, hats, beer steins, etc... Some of the "Norm" types there keep their lists in a bound volume. Parking is kind of a bitch, so you'd better carpool if you're going on a Friday or Saturday night. Anyways, thats my plug. give it a shot if you're ever in Corpus. |

I used to have a regular place that I stopped in for a drink and some light fare on the way home from work on a regular basis. After a while, the barkeep would no-charge me about every third time for a couple of mixed drinks and minor food items like stuffed potato skins and stuff like that. Good places do stuff like that for regular customers. Give him a good tip, and recommend the place to your friends. |
will do, ill tell em andy sent me |

I comp my best customers from time to time as well. Especially the ones who come in every day. They're usually the best tippers and we are definately making money off them anyhow. I comp them in front of my boss and he's never said anything about it. Good customers get free stuff...just the way it is. I don't comp employee's friends just because they are their friends, nor do I comp pretty women just because they are pretty. I comp regulars who tip well. Regulars who never tip or tip shitty never get comped. People who expect to get comped never get comped. EDIT: I don't comp food items, though. Just drinks. |
