Microwave ovens.... I just threw in some leftovers to reheat.  Set the time and pressed start.  Turntable spins CLOCKWISE.  After the time is up, I check the food and decide it needs a bit more nuking, so I put it back in and set the time and pressed start.  Turntable spins COUNTER-CLOCKWISE... WTF  Why is this?  Every use of the microwave switches the rotational direction of the turntable... Is it really alien tech, or am I missing some obvious reason for this?

You have the universal model, works north and south of the equator.

No, but this is.

Just a simple single phase AC motor driving that turntable. Without additional controls it's essentially random which direction it turns. Since it doesn't matter for this they leave out the extra cost.

DC motors apparently always spin in one direction only. I'm not real familiar with AC motors.
