That you have to either reinstall windows or repair windows if you change your mobo?

Vista has worked fine on both mobos but x64 will cause the comp to restart once I tell it to boot.

if they chipset changes drastically you have to do that on windoz xp.   if the chipset is the same you shouldn't have to.  you can try the repair install if that don't work.  fresh install

Difficult to answer.  The cleanest way is to reinstall, but like has been said, it can be done...and I've done it.

Basically the motherboard appears to Windows as a good number of devices.  Normally when I have more than 1 device to install (say a video card, a network card, and a sound card)...the safest way to do it is to install one at a time, then reboot and do the next device.  But to save time I've tossed everything in and gone with that.  If a problem appears, it can be a small mess and I've even gone back to taking them all out and going one at a time.

But with a new mobo, you don't have that luxury, you're throwing multiple installs at Windows at once.  So the first time you boot up Windows on the new board, Windows will "find" and try in install each of those devices.  It is possible for Windows to fail and not give you the desktop.

I say that it'll work 3/4 of the time...easy.

a repair install isn't hard to do and shouldn't lose settings

I have gotten away with switching MB's a few times just by doing a repair. For about the same amount of time you are better off pulling what you want to save and do a clean install.

You should do a clean install when changing a motherboard weather you want to or not, you are asking for problems if you don't.
