Yeah, it seems kind of shocking. But then consider that probably 9 of 10 men are "assaulted" at some point during their lifetime. ETA: Oh, is that just sexual assault?retract if so. But if they're talking about having someone take a swing at them. I was just looking at the picture... |

Back in the old college day I did some research on sexual assault. The 1 in 4 number is generally attributed to Mary Koss's national survey research where she asked women what types of unwanted sexual activity they had experienced. One the of the findings was that 25% of these college women had experienced successful or attempted sexual assaults that met the Ohio state code definition. |

"There are liars, damn liars, and statisticians." - Mark Twain All good shocking "statistics" need a little tweaking and arranging of the raw data. Or perhaps it wouldn't sound shocking if the male rate were also noted. Considering that if I were to slap you on the arm, it can be prosecuted as assault this "fact" is rather meaningless. |
You could always email Oleg and ask him, or hunt around his site for sources/citations. I don't know him myself, but he occasionally works/partners? with an arfcommer on some projects. |
I think alot of it is girls getting drunk with guys and guys taking advantage of them. ![]() In the 4 that I talked to, 3 of the 4 were when the girl was drunk. Fucking disgusting. |

And while I *don't* disagree, tyman, I do believe the women SHARE in the responsibility for many of those situations. More than a few times I've had to fight off drunk girls' advances at parties, knowing that the girl was probably too drunk to realize what she was doing. And the girls' "friends" are rarely around, or sober enough, to help keep their friend out of trouble. A lot of those situations come about because BOTH parties were dumbasses. The statistic that's unbelievable to me is how many girls are abused (physically or sexually) growing up. When I was younger, I believed this to be the rare exception, but having talked to hundreds of middle-class suburban girls, the numbers are FAR larger than I could have imagined. -Troy |
