Military officials are now weighing whether to also send a second carrier strike group led by the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower. The warship was already scheduled to visit the Middle East, but Pentagon leaders are now deciding whether it should accompany the USS Gerald R. Ford. Placing both carriers and their accompanying ships in the eastern Mediterranean, close to the coast of Israel and the Gaza Strip, would amount to a massive show of force that would also serve as a deterrent against other groups who could join the conflict. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Sunday he ordered the Ford carrier strike group to be ready to assist Israel after the attack by Hamas that has left more than 1,000 dead on both sides. https://i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/10/18/76391655-12615885-image-a-1_1696960296722.jpg The Norfolk, Virginia-based carrier strike group led by the Ford was already in the Mediterranean. Last week it was conducting naval exercises with Italy in the Ionian Sea. The carrier is in its first full deployment. It is not clear whether the Eisenhower would replace the Ford or whether both strike groups would remain there as the conflict continue. That way, the first strike group can remain in place as the primary deterrent. I believe we are sending enough resources to the area to deter only, because frankly we don't know yet how far Israel will go with this one. If they take the fight to Iran the Navy doesn't want the whole Arab nation to get froggy. We shall see if this conflict escalates to a biblical level, my guess is not yet, but it's building. |
