It’s as good a time as any to bring up why Iran is acting out.
The Middle East is slowly moving away from organized strictly fundamentalist governments. Saudi Arabia, the custodians of Mecca and Medina, has been bringing in fairly significant reform for a while. MBS is ruling like a businessman rather than a mullah. Slowly but surely, social modernization is happening. This is a HUGE wake-up call to the area. Religion, commerce, and basic rights can coexist. The above really leaves Iran as the only fundamentalist government of a ME industrialized nation not allowing reforms. They know the clock is ticking and they are vulnerable. Their brand is built on strict control and reforms would be the beginning of the end. The only chance they have is to foment anti-western sentiment. |
