I just moved into a new place and got Cox Cable internet, I have a Belkin wireless router that's connected to a Linkseys Cable modem. I've tested my speed and my ping is 40ms, download speed is 3.2 Mbits, upload is 450 Kbits. I know my speeds are fast enough to watch Netflix instant to PS3 and stream TV shows from websites. Here's the problem–– When streaming video or downloading large files it will act like the my connection will just die for a second every 0.5-10 minutes. What happens when I'm watching Netflix is: -Movie will load and buffer within a few seconds and start playing. -In 0.5-10 minutes I'll lose internet I presume for a second and Netflix stops further buffering completly so my playback stops once I reach the unbuffered portion (Not much time till this happens). -Netflix will display a "connection slowed" screen and gives me a percent bar (like the one you get when starting the movie) saying "adjusting playback speed". -It just stays on 0% so I hit refresh and it loads and buffers in a few seconds then plays like normal. -Then in another 0.5-10 minutes it does it all again. In my old apartment with Qwest and the same router I had no issues and my ping/download speeds were twice as slow compared to what they are here. If I plug my laptop directly into my Cable modem it works completely fine. I can watch a whole movie. So I believe it's a issue with my router/computer connection or router/modem connection. |

It could just be placement of your wifi. Walls, TVs, turning the stove on... a plastic bag. Try plugging directly into the router.
Pingtest.net will give you an idea of your connection quality. Consumer routers are crappy. Wired, through my router, this is what I usually get.
If you can afford it, I'd suggest going up a tier. Going from 3megs to 15 is the same as dial-up to 3megs. |

this is a common issue with belkin routers. if it works great hardwired to your modem. its obvious its a setting with your router. possibly MTU. call your isp and ask what they recommend No, don't bother calling cox on this, it's not something their customer service can help on. Part of the issue with routers is firmware, but they use junk hardware then put it in a fancy looking box with 2 air holes. They're slow, low ram and they overheat |
