That’s like saying all guns are 1911s, because a 1911 IS a gun.

No, it's not. It's like saying all non Colt manufactured 1911 style pistols are 1911's (which they basically are). And yes, a pumpkin is indeed a member of the squash family.

A pumpkin is a squash(as stated by others)

And..,

The varieties used for pies do not look like the carving pumpkins you have seen. They are smaller and lighter in color, and, are sweeter than regular carving pumpkins.

We use butternut.  Bake in the oven and mash for the pie(s) I suspect that the canned stuff is butternut as well.

“Pumpkin” flavor is a lie as well.  It’s nutmeg.

Pumpkin is absolutely disgusting and needs to be overpowered with a metric shit ton of spices to make it remotely edible.

Canned squash or not, pumpkin pie is gross

I’ve made pumpkin pies side by side the past couple years with canned pumpkin versus fresh sugar pumpkin. Mostly out of curiosity. Unless I overcook one of the sugar pumpkins I can’t tell the difference.

I’m gonna call BS. And if it’s not BS, it literally doesn’t matter.

This is the not the old school GD thread we want, this is the one we deserve.

Any time you can get people to discuss/argue the about pie, guns and 1911s in a thread is a win in my book.

Thanks OP! Great thread.

I grew up near a town where Libby's had a processing plant. In the fall they had gigantic piles of pumpkins outside to process into canned pumpkin. OP is hopefully less dumb now.

Morton, IL? Something like 90% of pumpkins in the world are canned there. They have giant hydraulic ramps that lift the whole semi and trailer up at an angle to dump the pumpkins into the cannery, interesting to watch.
