I thought the movie sucked! ZERO entertainment "value"

If anything, it's abysmally BORING.

The movie goes by really fast, and if you've read the book before watching the movie, you'll be disappointed.  Hell, you'll probably be disappointed if you haven't read the book and you've watched the movie.

It was fun to watch, but looking back on it, I shoulda waited 'till it came on HBO or something instead of buying the DVD.

absolute WORST war movie i have ever seen. i turned it off after about an hour.

It's NOT about the war, Nor is it about anything remotely Marine. It's about a whiney little bitch and how miserable he was in the Marines.

TBS is right.

We thought it was BY FAR the worst movie we ever saw, and the lady at Blockbuster said they never had so many negative comments about a movie.

I wish we had that time back.

I thought Jamie Foxx was pretty good in it.

I'd read the book before watching the movie though.  Borrow the book, don't buy it.  It's good for a funny read, but beyond that, you're just buying something to keep your coffee table level.

I just watched it recently, and thought it was an excellent movie.

It really shows how you loose perspective in training, you become so focused on the task at hand.

Well, I bought the book way back when.  I've never been in the military, but it seems that Swofford is a whiny bitch that shouldn't have enlisted in the first place.  That said, the stories and dialogue in the book are good for a funny read.  I figured the movie would be about the same.

Alas, I was wrong.

I was forced to watch some of it, I was waiting somewhere and it was on. I agree with you.

Well I didnt serve at that time, but really its just a bad movie.

I have never been changed into a "Hot Chick" either, but I know that movie sucks, well not as bad as jarhead, but still really bad.

In the commentary, Swofford says he never actually did that.  They combined that with the part in the book where he was about to shoot himself.

Highly disappointing movie; not even worth as a "rent it once" kind of movie. You'd probably get more entertainment value if you go watch CSI on SPIKE.

Save your money.

I knew plenty of whining, useless cunts when I was in. I met very few Marines that didn't bitch about the suck at one time or another. Goofing on lifers was a favorite pass time as well. Of course, most of the Marines I served with were good, dedicated people. But enough shit heads were around that they couldn't go without notice.

I agree, the movie sucked ass and Swofford is a shitbird.

Definitely dissapointing as an entertainment flick, however I'm certain it was a relatively close illustration of the experiences several Marines went through during Desert Shield.  (NOT Desert Storm)

In summary, the movie shows the frustrations our Marines experienced while waiting for the green light to kick ass while dealing with the difficulties of being away from loved ones.  (at least that's what I took from it)

I actually watched the movie while my wife was deployed to the Middle East.  It really struck a nerve.

The book is 100x better than the movie. Anti-war? Pfft, Swofford is a legitimate war veteran and is well entitled to his views, it's disgusting and disgraceful in the manner of which many people here defame him because of his views.

That said, the movie isn't that great. Read the book which was very good.

Quite possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. I served during that time frame, but did not go to SWA. We stayed on Okinawa in case PI or NK decided to start some shit.

Basically it is a movie about a shitball Marine.  He was a lying, thieving, two-faced pile of shit as a Marine.  It is anti-war crap and he is proud to have wrote and served as a pile of crap Marine.

If you want to see the story of an asshole who was a burden on the corp, this is the movie for you.

Dont feel bad I paid $8 to see it.

It seems like they took every stupid Military urban legend:

1. guy getting shot in basic.
2. Girl sending deployed guy video of Jody railing her.
3. Starting fire near Ammo point
4. Dumb ass Joe(new soldier burning shit for being stupid).
5. Getting called for a alert while the whole PLT is watching a on post movie??? was that a 90's Marine thing???
ETC..ETC....

Also what kind of squad leader stops for the night in a burning oil field with oil falling from the sky???

Did they have comms with higher??? Surely they would have bypassed that shit.

The Movie was OK as I considered it as a Scary Movie 1-4 type  mil movie, realy stupid and having no chance to make sense.

I understand being deployed will make you lose you mind at times, but I never had any desire to act like a fag in front of a reporter.

Oh yea and the swofford character was a whinny little bitch, everyone misses their Wife/girlfriend. suck it up man, how in the hell was he ever a Scout sniper??

I think he was probably the Scout snipers Chow bitch/pogy bait carrier.

I can't stand it when holllywierd makes a movie about the Corps and every other word is"OOHRAH!"

Also, I joined the Corps shortly after GW1, and I can't ever remember my entire unit being in the same movie theatre at the same time.

I also don't remember being welcomed to the unit with a make shift branding iron, we just got the news guys drunk and took embarrassing pictures of them, which we then sent to their parents.

Yes, and in SWA during Desert Shield/Desert Storm as well. He may be a legitimate war veteran and entitled to his views, but so am I. The movie sucked, and if the movie is an accurate portrayal of him, he sucked...he was a shit bird of a Marine if ever there was one.

My manner of defaming him may be disgusting and disgraceful, but for that I make no apologies for his conduct was disgusting and disgraceful to Marines who served there, or anywhere for that matter.

"Swofford reminds me of the guy who is just too cool for everything. He makes himself a brooding hero who reads The Iliad and absentmindedly chews on the bullet he has on a necklace. He can out-drink, out-screw, out-PT, out-shoot, and out-(add your own capability here) anyone on the planet, especially the sub-mortals that surround him. While everyone else is enjoying the last bit of comfort in the rear before moving forward, he is assembling his weapon with a blindfold on, outside in a tent where real warriors choose to live, in under 7 seconds. While others are exuberant to be coming home after the war, he is sulking and carrying his mental scars, from what I’m not quite sure.

If one adjective could describe this moron it would have to be the all-encompassing “anti.” It is not hard to see he is full of himself at the expense of those around him, childish, and disloyal to the Marine Corps. I, for one, am glad he is out of my Corps and for the insult he has bestowed on my brothers and me, he had better hope I never get near one of his book signings."

Great review.

The book was alright for a read when I was bored.

The movie...

I would have rather watched my grandmother eat cornflakes.

Watched it with my father, who served with the Corps in Vietnam from 66'-72'. Every other word out of his mouth for the duration of the movie was either, "pussy", "fuckstick", or "bitch". To this day, it is damn near impossible to get him to watch any war flick other than FMJ or Apocalypse Now.

Sounds like somebody wants to wear their cheesy head hat while they ride up Brokeback Mountain.

Occasionally a vet can be a scumbag, Swofford proves it.

There are all sorts of stories in the service.  This was one of them.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it any less legit.

I remember one guy in the Navy who was prior Army.  He just couldn't make it in the civilian world.  He got a part time job bouncing at a local CW bar.  Started complaining about being in (reminder: this was his second enlistment... he knew what he was getting into) and missing muster or showing up drunk.  Eventually married a local hooch with a young baby who was looking for a meal ticket.  Last I heard he was still serving but was a very sad, sad individual.

Or the guy who missed his girlfriend and daughter so much in A school that he went AWOL.  When he was brought to Captain's Mass he told the Rear Admiral of the base that he wanted out and that if they wouldn't discharge him he would escape and steal HIS (the RA's) car and go AWOL again.

He DID.  Last I heard he is making big rocks into little rocks.

There was the girl in boot camp who was always a bit strange and tried to OD on painkillers which got her a one-way ticket to a psych ward.

I have a ton of stories of people who VOLUNTARILY enlisted and weren't happy with serving.  It happens.

Most of the movies that are made are John Wayne-esque... all about the man, the hero, the one who won the war!

This is a different perspective.  And it IS accurate for some.

yes it's true the mmilitary is full of fuckups.

that's not the issue here. The issue is this movie was made for one reason and one reason only. to demonize the military and american culture and policy as a whole.
