Earlier this year I bought a 16.6k mile 2017 JGC 4x4 Limited, 5.7 Hemi with towing package for use as our getaway vehicle.  Daily driver is my purchased new '03 Tacoma 4x4 with 153k miles on the clock.  We have been out of town a few times and it typically displays between 20 and 21 MPG.  About the same as my Tacoma.  I love the torque of this engine, it is pleasure to drive.

I would like to try the ethanol free for greater gas mileage.  Which octane are you using?  I have available locally 87 or 93 octane, both at a premium price.

I have an 08 with the V6. If the towing capacity isn’t an issue then get it. Been reliable over 10 years and 170k miles.

Although mine was great in my 03 Rubicon offroad I didnt like it much on the road. I had to tow a small atv and 2 people in the backseat. My friend in his v6 ranger and 2 atv's off and left me. Going up a paved incline I could not get to 3rd gear. 4.10's and 31's. I cant remember if I had the cold air intake and bored throttle body at the time or not but I was embarrassed.

For what it's worth, I have a 5.7 Hemi Grand Cherokee with 157,000 miles and have never had any engine or tranny issues.

GF has a 3.6L WK2.

It's a pretty meh engine but has been trouble free for 120k so far.

The stupid transfer case in those vehicles clunks so bad though. And when you google it you learn it's just "a jeep thing!"

funny. because the Pentastar is a Mercedes engine. it was on a few of the 2011-2012 engines and didn't typically appear till after 30K-50K miles. and yeah they did fix the problem and Chrysler has issued an extended warranty for this problem.

how do I know this? because my Jeep is in the shop right now waiting for a cylinder head to become available...

I had a 5.7 Challenger for over 100k it’s a great engine.

So good they based the 6.4 off of it and not off the 6.1.

I have 50k on a 6.4 no problem.

I have 35k on a V6 Grand Cherokee.

It is just fine.

Here is what I would do.

If you already have a car or truck with serious/fun power,
Get the V6.

If you don’t, get the Hemi.

Get the Hemi.  Pentastar is fine for a mall crawler but if you want to tow, you want the extra HP.  Resale, if it matters, is always going to be better with the larger engine.

2005 Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.7. It's on it's third starter. 195K miles. Not the most fuel efficient vehicle on the road. But it will tow a 4500 lbs. trailer up the grade to the Western entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel at 70 MPH and never miss a beat.

I think between the two fuel costs will be about the same. I'd buy another Hemi if we were to buy another Grand Cherokee.
