on September 10th I hired an electrician to put a generator hook up on my breaker box. They came promptly and installed the 30amp connection, but they never installed the transfer switch. I called 3 or 4 times over the following 2 weeks for them to finish the job, but I kept getting the excuse that the transfer switch was on order. They also told me I don't pay until the job is complete. At this point they have done work and installed hardware and I haven't paid a dime. I got tired of calling them so I stopped and left it up to them to get in touch with me. Fast forward to today, I have heard nothing from the electrician, but I still need the job completed. Am I wrong to call another electrician to finish the job? What about the work the first electrician did, but hasn't been paid for?

I would call another electrician to have them complete the job, pay them, and then (this is where it gets dicey) pay the difference to the first company and call it quits.

Of course, if the first company never charges you.......

Call them and advise them that the work has remained incomplete for over 1 1/2 months and you now consider their work to date completed and that you will hire another contractor to complete the transfer switch installation.  They can bill you for the work which has been completed.  Don't get talked into giving them more time - or you'll be back here in 3 weeks posting the same thing.  Its time to move on.

Fuck that, I wouldn't pay a dime to the company who didn't finish the job.

AT THE VERY LEAST, you deserved a call form the guy.

So, the right thing would to pay them for the work done. I feel it would be right to pay for parts, but not labor. I guess I could give them the option to remove what they did.

They did labor, you received parts.  Pay them for what they have done, make it a point that they will not be called again by you, nor will you recommend them to others.

You don't get to stiff them.

I just tried calling and there number has been changed. I call that number and I get an out of service message. I guess it is time to find an electrician to finish the job.

You did your part. Now it's up to them to find you. Screw 'em.

Just offhand I'd figure that the demand for transfer switches since Ike has orders backlogged.

Ooops.  I didn't see that the number had been disconnected.
