My BIL is a 2 time felon, 20 years old, and a dip shit.
He has been released on a "drug court" program. I don't know a lot of details but from what I can tell in this particular county they set him up to fail. As part of the program he has to activley seek a job, gaining 4 applications per day until he gets a job. He's getting plenty of applications and even a few interviews but when the felony comes up, its see you later. My question: what jobs might accept someone with a felony? Any help would be greatly appreciated! ETA: Found some info about this "Drug Court", if you're interested Link |

only thing I see aronde here that will over look a felony that pays decent is construction and that is hit or miss depending on the company but if it is something hard and shitty like roofing or sewage they might take himm even the kwike marts won't take um anymore mostly because of lotto and liquor issues |

My employer hires immigrants, people with disabilities, and felons. We make cold weather clothes (Polartec) for the military and many, many other items.
I get to work there because I have a disability. (brain injury from medical malpractice in early childhood) A guy I work with just got released from parole. I don't know what he did but he went to prison as an adult when he was 15. He's a hard worker and shows strong leadership potential. He WILL become better than his past. http://www.peckham.org/Default.aspx?tabid=31 I operate the machine that fixes the velcro to the right jacket panel of the ECWCS Gen III jackets. (The square and rectangular bits simultaneously.) http://www.adstactical.com/about_ads/gen3_level3.htm |

At one time around 4 years ago, I was in internet sales at a Chevy dealer in the ghetto. At any given time, about 1/3 of the sales staff and porters were on work release from the county, and half of the sales managers had felonies or weren't far from them. Back when subprime lenders were actually lending to anyone with a pulse, there was good money to be made. Of course, it's a little harder right now to find a dealer in a subprime market that still has their doors open, let alone one that's hiring. ![]() |

Construction trades, warehousing, dockworker...pretty much relegated to un/semi-skilled laborer type stuff. If he gets his shit together and makes good, he can even start his own gig. Convicted felons aren't prohibited from owning/running their own business. Got to ask...how does one become a 2 time felon at only 20 years old? |

He went back for round 2, was actually excited because he got a call back, until that question reared its ugly head. I am just afraid he will get disheartened and turn back to the shitty life he was leading... drugs, theft, and more drugs. |
| When you have an issue that makes working in corporate America difficult, be it a felony or a desire to tell people to go to hell all the time, it usually makes sense to start your own business. There is usually work for plumbers, for instance. You just have to keep your mouth shut long enough t learn the trade and put away enough money to go out on your own and you have to have the discipline to properly fund your own retirement and to either keep up with the paperwork or have someone do it for you. |

BIL is a two time felon. He gets jobs working construction sometimes and had a job at the humane society. I wouldn't even hire him to mow my lawn, he'd crash the mower, syphon the gas and put it in his car then steal the wheel off the mower and try to sell them...before noon.

There is a place that makes pallets in my town that hires felons and parolees. I see guys with records working for a roofing company in town and some of the asphalt companies. Half the garbage men with the company that has the city contract seem to be sex offenders. Home health care and nursing homes seem to have a frightening number of people with sketchy records. |

Quoted: He can get a job riding shotgun on a Honey Truck. ....And by honey truck I mean septic pumping shit truck. This. My childhood best friend got mixed up in dealing. He got busted and had to serve 5 years. He got lucky in the construction fields only because of Katrina. If it were not for the storm.... shit sucker |

Quoted: Quoted: Got to ask...how does one become a 2 time felon at only 20 years old? Apparantly hawking stolen items that once belonged to a church worth about $2500 will get the ball rolling. Ouch. Yeah, I guess that would. Having said that, it's cool that you're willing to reach out for the guy. |

I just don't want to ask because I'm focusing on who he will become rather than who he was. I really hope this guy goes to college. I can see a pardon in his future. |

Damn kid still hasn't apologized for that (Wife said he's too scared I might hurt him), stole the one firearm I wanted to pass down to my kid. So believe me... my reach is very limited at this point, not willing to lay my reputation on the line for him. Just more or less trying to get him pointed in the right direction. |

Its definitely not easy, easpecially in this economy. He'll have to work twice as hard as everyone else and expect to make less money then the 20 yr old slackers who show up hung over everyday. He needs to look at labor positions that are damn hard work. Whether its dealing with shit (literally), at a junk yard, or digging ditches with notihng more then a hand shovel.
If he is not up for back breaking work then I'd argue he'll never find a job. Best of luck to him. |

You're a good man Charlie Brown. :) |

Once he can prove he has his shit together more doors will open for him, but at this stage sounds like he's too close to making another bad decision. He could look at the trades, pick one he thinks would be a good career, and then seek out an apprenticeship. Better tell him man to man he's about out of chances though, time to grow up. |

So a convicted drug dealer/user felon stole a gun from you and you didnt file a police report? |

I had no proof he did it, cops went and questioned him and he didn't confess. I knew it was him when it happened, but like I said no proof. He later admitted to my wife what he did, apparantly one of the steps to "recovery" is being honest and laying all your shit out there. ETA: Couldn't have picked a worse gun for criminal activity... Ruger Vaquero SA 44-40... hell I could barely find ammo for the thing. How the hell is some hood (referring to the guy he "gave" my gun to for drugs) going to find it?

My best friend did a 10-year sentence, convicted violent felon and sex offender. Spent the best years of his life in jail - got out when he was 36.
Took him about six months to get a job. I was ready to offer a hand and get him a job, but he never asked and never needed it. I did write a few reference letters, though. He finally got on at a fast-food joint making not much more than minimum wage. He sucked it in, did the shitty work, showed up on time and sober and was a good worker. Fast forward seven years later and he's married (I was his best man at the wedding), an assistant manager at one of the major coffee chains, and was in line to be manager at a new store had the economy not tanked. It's hard, but it can be done. Your BIL has to realize he's gonna have to start with a shit job and earn some credibility and respect to move up in the world. But since he's a three-time loser and only 20 years old, doesn't sound like the type to be willing to put in an honest-day's work for low pay. ETA: GO YANKS!!! |

Quoted: He should look for whatever labor related jobs he can find now and apply a great deal of effort to learning a trade such as welding, construction, plumbing, etc. Folks with drug related felonies may stand a better chance than folks with violent felonies. But the best advice I can give you is to encourage him to follow through with mastering a trade that he can feasibly turn into his own business one day. It's only going to get HARDER in the future for him to find work so he needs to be in a position to "be his own boss". My BIL is a 2 time felon, 20 years old, and a dip shit. He still has plenty of time to get this worked out to his advantage. I have a brother who has a serious felony and served 2 years from 16-18. All adult time so it will be with him forever. He earned 3 different certifications while in. Welding, Electric, and some other construction oriented field. He's 30 now and has a very successful construction business. Jackass probably makes more than me but I'll never admit it to him |
