Don't "smile vacantly like an idiot".
Honest. My wife read that in a book. Seriously: always ask: "What characteristics are you looking for in a good employee?" Get them talking and follow up on what they say to see what you're getting self into and give examples of how you would be a good employee. Ask questions, there is nothing worse than asking an interviewee 'Do you have any questions for me?" and getting nothing or trivia. Have some good stories about how you took initiative, went beyond the requirements of your job, or in some way are a star performer. Remember they want someone who follows instructions, does their job well, takes ownership of their tasks, and is easy to work with. If you have time tonight, get a copy of 'Knock 'Em Dead' by Yates, it's a great book for interviewing. Good luck. Let us know how you did. |

Point out specific examples on your resume which reinforce what you're saying. But also remember that people like to hire someone who they like. A little smalltalk to try and get to know the person never hurts. |

If it is anything like it is around here don't be surprised if you are in competition with 500 or so other applicants.
You are doing what you can to get back in the work force and that is respectable. Show Respect, Show interest, Show up on time, and try to dress decent. Good Luck! |

Poll inbound. stop referring to it as an interview and start believing that it is a conversation. Also, acting like you don't care helps me (don't do that during the "conversation, though). |

Not really. I have been making > $17/hr since I was 22. I could have my choice of at least three other jobs than the one I have now for > $20/hr. There is alot of misconceptions about WV, if you are willing to show up drug free and work your ass off for 10 -12 hours the money is there. The trouble is employers are having a time finding the drug free ones. It's really a shame when you have 38 people show up for an interview for a $16/hr job with benefits and only 2 end up passing the drug screen. I know of employers here that give the drug screen before the interview because it's cheaper to weed them out than it is to waste the companies time sending them through an interview and a physical first.
I will admit that it is beginning to slow down here also, and companies are shedding their dead weight. I hope the turn around comes before we get drug down the abyss with the rest of the country world. |
