Looking to buy a JD riding mower. I am going to have about 2 acres to mow. What model deere do you guys recommend I get?

Also, is there any difference between the ones they sell at the home depot, and the ones you buy from a dealership? Can i save money by buying from the big box, or am I buying an inferior product?

Thanks!

So you are saying that mtd makes the john deer riding mowers that home depot sells?

I don't want a 60 inch mower, it has to fit into the garage.

if you are cutting more than a half acre your riding lawn mower is going to last just about 3 years maye 5....since you are cutting a 2 acre lot i suggest getting a small tractor and a finishing mower...cant go wrong ..you will always use it especially if you get a box blade with the package...aslo you can buy a new tractor around here with 3 attachment for about 4 k including a trailer or you can run out nad get a used one for about 2 1/2 k thats damn good and will last you about 15 years + if you take care of it

or get a 4weheeler and a finishing mower for about 3 k

what is a box blade?

Why will a riding mower last only 3 years, my old groundskeeper has had the same tractor for at least 5. And she does lawns every day.

I don't know much about these things. Up until now we have lived where you had to hire a groundskeeper, but now we are moving to a large parcel of land of which roughly 2 acres will need to be mowed.

NEGATIVE !!!!  These are the EXACT same mowers sold by the John Deere dealers.  One dealer told me that they thought that they were going to be getting out of the mower bussiness, not enough profit margin on them.

But back to your question, is the 2 acres your mowing mostly open, or lots of trees?  You should go with the largest mower you can afford, unless you have many trees, etc to mow around.  I have an acre to mow, but due to fences, trees, etc, a large mower would have just slow me up.

This should help  Mower Selection

They don't sell JD 455's at Home Depot. The ones sold at Home depot are the same ones that JD sell's but they are the cheapo MTD knockoffs that any good JD dealer will tell you to stay away from. Tell your JD dealer you don't want a knockoff and he will know what you mean and steer you towards a real JD. The knockoffs are just a way for the tightwads to think there on a JD. I have a JD 455 diesel with 450 hours and it's been bullet proof. Look at a JD 400 series lawn mower with low hours (somepeople trade them in for a new one every year). You should be able to find them in the $4000 range and they will last a life time. Or you can buy a MTD knockoff for a grand and replace it every couple years.

I have a Troybilt 46", 21 HP and 2 arcres.  The mower works fine.
$1800 at Lowes.

I did have a Simplicity (much more $$$), lasted 19 years.  Passed from my father to me, damn good mower.

If you have the cash, look at a zero turn mover.  used commercial grade should last you quite awhile
