There is a thread about L.A.Gun buyback that hit a few lucky 7's.

The subject of stolen property came up an got me to to askin myself a question, I says self,

If I owned a M16 in 1980, and it got stolen, then recovered in 2011,

could I still do the paperwork and legally keep it ?

This hasn't happend that I know of. Just a Hummmmmm.

An unregistered one? No, you couldn't add it to the registry now. I don't think you could have even legally added it to the registry back then. If it was already registered, you should be able to get it back if you still had the paperwork, but the odds of that happening seem pretty slim.

My point being, say it was taken before you had to register an auto,

Yes sir I understand that this firearm has to be registered to be leagally possessed to be owned,

and I would gladly have done it, but it was stolen, reported and filed as stolen before the ban.

I get it back now, and can't register it.

It would have had to have been stolen prior to 1933 for you to have legally owned it without it being registered. Between then and 1986, you could have probably managed to register a machinegun that was already manufactured, but it still would have been illegal.
