Not a huge one, but I have a rack mountable 16 port giga switch, figured I might as well rack mount it.

Before you ordered that, did you ask if it was gorilla proof?

It appears that the two rack sides are not connected except for by attaching to whatever piece of equipment is mounted between them.  You might want to be prepared to purchase an extra 1U or 2U blank plate or two ($10 ea.) to keep everything nice and rigid.

I have an 84-inch tall rack on the side of my desk, fax machine (covered for the last 2 years), printers, scanners, DVR, PC tower, modem, and switch all reside there.

I bought a Dell 2410 24U years ago from ebay for next to nothing.
Catch was I had to pick it up.  Delivery would have killed the deal.
I have in it
APC Smartups 3000
HP Procurve unmanaged gig switch
Dell managed gig switch
patch panel
pfsense box
dell kvm server console
Norcco 420 chassis, almost full

It's a fun hobby.

You might want to get a tray or two for it.

Get a rack mount 10G Switch (or Gigabit Switch),  put the clusters on the trays with neat wiring to the switch.

Rack mount equipment tends to be more pricey, as it is generally intended for enterprise use, so it's worth the uptime.

Unless you were building a rack of linux server blades to make a bigger cluster....  (can never even guess what your next big step will be.)

Did you first check craigslist?

Datacenters like the one I work at throw out 42U's from time to time, they usually go to recycling centers that sell them off cheap as well.

Looks like it will work ok for a small setup. Like the others are saying, get a few blanks, or my personal preference, cable management blanks.

I personally like the D-ring style:

Others I work with prefer the plastic strip style:

Both serve well to contain cables and add structure.

Ever want to see what a high end home automation guy's home system looks like.

Here is my trainwreck. The last thing I want to do when I am not at work is, well, work. I will redo it eventually (been saying that for over a year now), I have a security dvr and a complete Crestron house audio and automation system sitting in my garage that will take up the bottom 1/2 of this thing.

Instead of screws they use small little square nuts that go in the slots of the rack. Once you place your equipment inside of the rack and tighten the nuts your equipment will be fine. The only issue would be if you are constantly removing your equipment and have to pull the nuts out and re-nut each slot again. You will also need a screw for each cage nut.

living the dream.

So I was looking at the servers Amazon has... and they're rather affordable...  So I got to looking at 2.5 SAS drives...  A lot of the images for these drives show them with their internals open to the air.  Are these just "marketing" images or are they actually open to the air and would thus require a clean room environment to function?

I'd rather deal with towers.  Cheaper, too.

Got it today.

Eventually I will probably throw a few rack mount linux servers in there.

That's 7 linux computers there, over 1 TeraFlops of computing power.

And so it starts. Next thing you know, you're planning out a half dozen 42U racks and a crapload of big UPS's to keep them running when the power burps

Used racks from local electronics recyclers or Craigslist is the best source, you can get them for prices ranging from free to $200 depending on what you're looking for. I'm cheap, and needed something somewhat shorter than the standard 42U for my short basement, so I ended up with an old HP minicomputer rack.

So what's the attraction for these setups?

That's sort of funny but very awesome!   That amount of computing power would have taken up full racks a decade ago, now the switch is the large component.

I wonder if they make a 1U Rack mount to hold Parallellas or Jetsons?   Somebody has to have thought of it.   Could mash together a triple fan panel and a shelf and set them behind the fans so it "looks" like a rack mount cluster.

Central power, UPS, ease of neat cabling/cable management, heat reduction, etc.

Rather than having a bunch of boxes that need independent sturdy cases which do not stack well when using more than 1, their own cooling, and long power/network cords.
