| Ok, let me give you a bit of background first. I am 5'7", 185 Lbs. I am obviously overweight, but not gigantic or anything. I want to build muscle and lose weight, but the sad truth is ive never been in shape and never really worked out with a strict (or useful) routine. So what do you recommend to someone literally just starting to work out? Also, should I focus on losing weight before building muscle, or is that nonsense? I am pretty clueless in this area so feel free to school me. |

Well, there's a lot of good options out there right now. There are a few things that I think are important no matter what you choose:
1. Find something you like, that's fun, that you'll stick with 2. Lift. Cardio is great, but IMO everyone should at the very least hit the big lifts as well- squats, deadlifts, shoulder press, bench press. 3. Find an actual routine...wandering around the gym for an hour with no goal, no purpose and no direction won't help a bit. Personally, I like Crossfit. It's always different, it's adaptable to any skill level and it's tons of fun. If that's not your thing, you can look at Starting Strength, P90x or many of the other proven routines out there. |
