Went to the range today and had some bad 22 ammo.  I had shot about 150 rounds out of the brick out of my MKII and was then shooting my Remington model 572.  I was about 5 rounds into my third tube of ammo when I had a round explode.  The bullet left the barrel, the head came off of the brass right at the rim and the rest of the brass is stuck in the chamber.

Being done with that gun for the rest of the day I borrowed my buddies Norinco Browning BAR 22 knockoff.  Jacked the first round in the chamber and KABOOM.

Part of the brass came off the bottom of the round and cut my hand open.  Two round in a row on two guns.  Here is a pic of the head from the first round and the brass from the second:

I would have stopped shooting after the first round, but for some stupid reason I was thinking that that was somehow my fault for maybe not locking the pump all the way forward.  I failed to remember that it won’t fire unless it is all the way forward and locked in place.

What are the odds? Two bad rounds like this in a row on two different guns.

This.

Remington has more than its share of duds. The stuff is not consistent, but I do not believe they intentionally make dangerous ammo.

Agreed,  I bet that in the collective millions of rounds of this stuff we have shot nobody has had this happen.

Where was you hand at? It would seem you had it under the

Yup, it ejects out of the bottom.  I was unfamiliar with the gun because I had never shot it before, but that doesn't make up for the fact that it was stupid and my fault.

I've had dozens of 'dud' 22's from Remington bulk packs.

After pulling many apart  I've discovered that the problem is an inconsistency of the primer in the actual rim of the cartridge.

Yikes!

KB'd a friend's 17HMR Rem 597and Remington sent him a coupon for a new rifle & replacement ammo IIRC.  Blew the magazine to pieces, bolt handle flew far far away.

I don't buy any Rem/UMC budget line ammo anymore.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have some steel-cased Russian .22 LR ammo that sticks hard in the chamber of almost every weapon I've tried it in.

My Ruger 10/22 has no problem with it, other than the excessive dirty residue it leaves.

About 15 years ago I had a bad box of reminton thunderbolts.  I had five blown out rims in about 20 rounds.  The last one broke the trigger guard (plastic) and my weekend was done.  Glad it wasn't worse.

I didn't think to get pics of it because the gun wasn't damaged, however the front sight dovetail is canted so much that you have to guess where to aim.

Not so rare for you. Please stop. As a side note, I had no idea that a .22 could do that to a hand.

Unfortunately, Remington Golden is one of the three loads that consistently work in the Advantage Arms Glock kits...

It's sad to watch them eject with varying degrees of oomph.

Send Remington an email. They'll send a prepaid shipping tag, all you do is box it up and send it.
After a week or so, check for 20.00 (paid 14 for the ammo).

I'd almost bet you have a shard embedded. Keep an eye on how it heals. I know of a case in which the anvil from a blown centerfire primer embedded in a guy's chest and caused all kinds of medical problems that were traced to the priming compounds on the anvil causing a reaction in the body.

I think the odds of that happening to you are almost nil, but thought I'd mention it...one good thing is that it was probably hot enough to be sterile.

Glad ur OK.

And as soon as I read where it was .22 ammo that caused a problem I knew it was Remington Golden bulk pack.  I have shot tens if not hundreds of thousand rounds of .22 ammo and Remington is one brand I refuse to buy or shoot.  Very inconsistent loading, some go bang, some go boom, some go pop, and some are duds.  All out of the same box.

Friends don't let friends shoot Remington Golden ammo.

If I remember correctly our last KB thread over here (in the.22lr forum) was with Remington. I stopped using it years ago because it was the highest dud-to-good ratio of any of the ammo brands. In addition to that those that do shoot were inconsistent as anything as to ejection force (never had a KB with it myself) . I do not have a chrony but this lead me to believe that there was varying charges of powder present.
I know that there are many here that swear Remington's good stuff, and maybe now a days it is better than when I was using it, but threads like this one lead me to believe that they have only gotten worst.
If better alternatives out there why are these still used?

OP- glad you were not hurt anymore than that.

I had the same happen with the Winchester ammo in the white and red box switched to federal no more problems
