I have a Kwikset "Smartkey" lock that is supposed to set itself to match any key you own.  Well, last week when i was in NYC, my parents were out smarted by it and locked out.  It rekeyed itself to not work.  Luckily, they had a back door key.  Just bought a Schlage this weekend and installed it.  Quality noticibly better.  I'm going to try and take the Kwikset back to Home Depot for a refund.

Kwikset is cheaply made and will not prevent a serious attempt to get in your house...at least get Schlage.

I can get through a Kwikset lock in about five seconds.

Kwikset is the lowest quality lockset with brand name recognition that you can buy.

Yes, you could buy a crappier brand, but it would be some name you never heard of.

Kwikset is crap.

I have the Weiser Lock version, and going on 6 years now without problem. Replace the batteries twice a year at the most and that is it. I remeber it was rather expensive when I got it though.

Schlage is good.
Medeco is better, but you won't find that at a box store.

Kwikset is horrible. Pot metal crap that will wear out in a few years.
Schlage is only one step up, but it is significantly better.

Weiser is about on par with Schlage. Maybe a bit cheaper in quality, maybe not.

Well hell, you might as well just get one of these... It's cheap, and when someone decides to break into your place, rather than smash one of your windows, they can just come in this way... I mean, you know... locks only keep honest people honest.

If I had to use keys, I wouldn't lock anything.
I have both kinds , the Qset is not as good but I've had one for about 10 years.
Seems to me they all need some weather protection

Kwikset is crap, for the most part.

This electronic shit is what it is.........keypads can wear out, the board inside can have a manufacturing defect and crap out on you, etc. etc.

So going with the lowest quality of something that's already inherently less reliable, I'd say no.  I wouldn't have one of those on my front door.  And if you do use the key bypass on deadbolts like that, they're harder to turn, which is annoying.

And the strike plate has to be extremely well-adjusted......that is, not contact whatsoever with the bolt........as soon as you start to get any warping in the door/door frame (which is very common), whereas a normal deadbolt will just stick, or be hard to turn, those pieces of shit will just fail to retract the bolt all the way.

Schlage makes a version of that............better quality, but I myself don't like an electronic lock of that caliber on a front door.  Not like it's a Trilogy lock or something.

And as far as "bump-proofing", higher security, etc. etc., most shitbags that are gonna break into your house (the lower level criminal) don't have the tools and knowledge to pick locks...........bumping maybe, but the way most American houses are built, access is just one broken window or kicked/rammed-in door, so not a whole lot of point to it.
