I decided to start off the year with a keto phase to help shed a couple holiday pounds and re-establish a low carb diet habit. No carb flu this time around, unlike last summer, when I was pretty convinced I was going to die. So that's been a plus. Now last time around, I had real problems coming out of ketosis. Bumped up my carb intake significantly from the ~20g keto levels after a two week keto phase, but was still in keto 4 weeks later. I discovered it because I ended up having to go to the doctor due to constant lethargy. Blood and urine still showed elevated levels of ketones even with me eating about 100g of carbs per day.
So this time, I'm trying urine testing to monitor ketone levels. From what I've read, optimal levels are around 20, but mine hit 80 on day 3, spiked to 160 the next day, and has stayed there ever since. I've bumped up my carb intake to nearly 50g of carbs now, and no change. I'm drinking at least 3/4 gallon of water a day, stuffing my face with fats (cheese, butter, bacon, ham, creamed vegetables, etc.), and am not hungry at all. I am tiny (98 lbs), so I don't know if that makes a difference. So why is my body doing this (again)? Why do my ketone levels spike so high and not come down? Is it something I should even worry about? |

I don't see a problem. Why are you going Keto? I prefer the blood ketone meter from Nova Max. Like I said, jump starting weight loss and re-establishing healthy eating habits. Holidays meant cookies and pies and goodies, as well as meals with extended family that certainly weren't low carb, but you can't exactly ask your in-laws to make special accommodations for just you. That led to the inevitable extra pounds that come along with eating a high fat diet, then throwing a bunch of carbs on top of it. It wasn't a lot of extra weight numerically (only 4-5 lbs), but that's a significant amount for someone my size. Like packing on 10 lbs in a month for someone around 190 lbs. |

Why keto? Kinda sounds like your having some issues with it. Why not Whole 30 and then just Paleo? At 98 lbs, why not just lift more and worry about weight loss less?
I'm still reading up on keto. My last round of weight loss took six months to lose 35 lbs. I'm not cutting until mid to late summer, but might use keto as the way to drop weight. |

In my experience if you already have a good amount of muscle mass, keto works well to help you drop body fat. If you aren't very muscular, it doesn't work as well because the metabolic effects are a little different. Also having a relatively clean diet going into starting keto helps as well. |

From what I read, after wondering about what you said the other day, is that you're not burning enough keytones out of your system. So you have a surplus. How hard are you working out? Not as hard as I should be, that's for sure. Been pulling a bunch of OT at work, which is 12 hour shifts plus 45 minutes commute time there and 45 minutes home. I can get a little in here and there, but it's not what it should be. |

Ketones are a waste product, not enegy. iirc https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketone_bodies Ketone bodies can be used for energy. Ketone bodies are transported from the liver to other tissues, where acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate can be reconverted to acetyl-CoA to produce energy, via the citric acid cycle. Ketone bodies cannot be used by the liver for energy, because the liver lacks the enzyme ß-ketoacyl-CoA transferase, also called thiophorase. Acetone in low concentrations is taken up by the liver and undergoes detoxification through the methylglyoxal pathway which ends with lactate. Acetone in high concentrations due to prolonged fasting or a ketogenic diet is absorbed by cells other than those in the liver and enters a different pathway via 1,2-propanediol. Though the pathway follows a different series of steps requiring ATP, 1,2-propanediol can be turned into pyruvate. |

Someone tell Miss Naan Bread or whatever her name is that I'm the only true #98lbsweakling around here! I own the no muscle mass category. In fact, I have so little muscular weight, I actually fill the top 1-8 spots on the weakling awards... Chick can't step up to this out of no where! I dominate "can't even lift!" Who does she think she is? Coming to the SD&F all, "I don't get enough exercise." Do you even injure yourself? |

I'm not sure if she was just spreading her 87 posts per day out around the smaller forums that no one has heard of, or if she's here really after my #98lbsweaking title. I won't have it. I'll go fail on a lift right now! Don't try me! Nah. I won't make it to CW. Don't drink much anymore. Don't shoot near as much as I used to either. Can't get away from the family right now. Need to be home helping hold down the fort. I already canceled a hunt to be home. Not duck hunting near as much this year which sucks. And the wife and I canceled one of our spring vacations to be home. We are still hitting Napa, Hawaii, Arkansas, and somewhere on the east coast. Maybe Virginia Beach or South Carolina. We'll still get away for a little bit. But a as it is right now, CW is out of the vacation equation. Home gym FTW! I'm not looking forward to any weight cut coming. I'm enjoying eating all of the things right now. I'm not sure how much of this weight I'm putting on is muscle. I am gaining. We will see if I can keep up with the Stronglifts weight progression this time... Already failed OHP. Dead is over bodyweight. Squats are just under. I deloaded rows because rowing 135 lbs for 5x5 just makes me want to get off the earth. Went back down to 115 lbs.

Watch it! That is just hurtful. I can out bench the baby sitter. She's a tiny thing. She might have me in dips and pull-ups though. Gymnast are freaky wicked strong when working with body weight. But I'm pretty sure out nanny has a higher dead than I do. My wife picked a gal with the highest qualifications and most experience that fit with our family. She also has the most sacks while playing on the 1998 Raiders defensive line.

What unit of measure are you using for ketone levels? I've always seen it expressed in mMol/L, in which you'd want a range of like 1.5-3.
ETA, those urine strips have a very short lifespan. If they are approaching a year old, you may want to replace them, or at least run a control test (get someone you know is not in ketosis to use one and make sure it doesn't show ketones) |

The color matched up perfectly for him, and got progressively darker for me over the course of a couple days. |

Did you ask r/keto? I feel like they'd know what to tell you. I stay away from Reddit. Far, far away. This was more a curiosity for me. I'm nearing the end of my keto phase, although I think it will likely take a long time for me to really come out of it (same as last time). Now that I know how I reacted last time, I am better prepared to deal with that. Now I'm more interested in the whys as well as any negative side effects that may occur because of it, aside from exhaustion. And by exhaustion, I don't mean just a little tired. I mean "thought I was pregnant, first trimester, could not stay woke" exhausted. I would wake up tired, be 2 seconds from sleep all day, and fall asleep as soon as I got home. That is entirely abnormal for me, and went away within days of me increasing my carb count even further. And I was eating a ton of fatty foods at the time. I knew it was important not to scrimp on the fat needed for energy, so my fat consumption was through the roof. |
